This is another sleeper from the back waters of Bordeaux, where some surprisingly good wines can be made, and consumers need to be aware of them. This property has been on a nice qualitative roll for a while, and this well-made 2013 exhibits saturated color and sweet blackcurrant and black cherry fruit with hints of cedar wood and incense. The wine is round, juicy and surprisingly pure and delicious. Drink it over the next 5-7 years. 2014-2021 Rating: 87-88 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com (Aug 2014)

Dark ruby. Fresh aromas of dark berries, violet, graphite and cigar box. Bright, moderately dense and fine-grained, with nicely ripe flavors of dark fruits, chocolate and oak. Firm acidity and a solid tannic structure give this wine plenty of backbone and extend the fresh flavors at the back. Not particularly complex, but better-balanced than most wines from the lesser Left Bank appellations. Rating: 86-88 Ian d'Agata - Stephen Tanzer website (May 2014)

Cassis and black cherry dominate the nose quite rich and the start of the palate is sweet fruited. There are fresher flavours in the middle and the back palate lacks a bit of substance. 2017-27 Rating: 84-88 Derek Smedley MW, www.dereksmedleymw.co.uk (May 2014)

Château Sénéjac

So far south in the Haut-Médoc that it exists in splendid isolation, without vineyard neighbours, in the tiny settlement of Le Pian Médoc, is Château Sénéjac. The usual Bordelais long complicated history is crowned by the purchase of Sénéjac in 1999 by Lorraine Cordier, owner of Château Talbot. Since Lorraine’s death, Sénéjac has been managed by her sister Nancy Bignon Cordier with operations overseen by Alfred Tesseron and his team from Château Pontet Canet. There are 39ha of vineyard, in a single block, planted with 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot, with an average age of 35 years. The wines of Château Sénéjac offer splendid value and relatively early appeal.
