CHÂTEAU SUDUIRAUT

2013 1er Cru Classé Sauternes

Colour White
Origin France, Bordeaux
Village Sauternes
Classification 1er Cru Classé

Rich and sleek, waxy, suave, full-bodied, a grand pommaded Lord in an immacualte dinner jacket. Du grand luxe! All as rich as can be but it holds it all together with immaculate style. When we taste this at Pichon, Christian says characterises 2013 as being, with 2003, 2005 and 2009, in the line of the 'fatties' - he thinks 2009 the fattest of all. He likened them to roly-poly babies with all their puppy-fat around their wrists and ankles. Rating: 93 L&S (Apr 2014)

This is on the exotic side of the ledger, with mouthfilling ginger, mango, quince and papaya flavors that course through, backed by a singed marshmallow note. Drinking range: 2016 - 2033 Rating: 94 James Molesworth, The Wine Spectator (Jan 2016)

(92% semillon and 8% sauvignon blanc; 50% new oak): Bright yellow with a golden tinge. Deep, pure and rather refined on the nose, with aromas of exotic fruits, hazelnut and honey complicated by a boatload of smoky botrytis. Opulent on the attack, then large-scaled and solidly structured in the middle palate, delivering very pure, precise flavors of caramel apple, mango, papaya, grapefruit and honey. Big but not heavy, this finishes rich, strong and long, with notes of vanilla and sweet spices framed by laser-like acidity. A knockout Suduiraut. The estate performed three tries from late September to late October, but the wine is made up almost entirely of the second picking. This marvelously balanced wine sports roughly 145 grams per liter of residual sugar and about 5.6 grams of total acidity. Rating: 93-95 Ian d'Agata - Stephen Tanzer website

The nose has a fragrant charm white peach tropical fruits and although it appears quite light the palate has sumptuous fleshy richness lots of candied peel, ripe apricots and orange marmalade. Tangerine refreshes the mid palate lighter at the back but fills out on the finish with a luscious mix of flavours. 2020-35. Rating: 91-93 Derek Smedley MW, www.dereksmedleymw.co.uk

Château Suduiraut

Sauternes Premier Cru 1855 The de Suduiraut family lived on their estate in Preignac at least as far back as 1580. In the later years of the 17th Century, a dispute with the local Governor led to the château being flattened. In response, Comte Blaise de Suduiraut rebuilt in lavish manner, with gardens laid out by King Louis XIV's designer. Since the de Suduiraut's time there have been many owners, but today it is in the very capable hands of AXA Millésimes. The 92ha of vineyard are planted with 90% Semillon and 10% Sauvignon Blanc. There is a second wine, which takes its name from a neighbouring estate that was absorbed into Suduiraut in 1831, and is called Castelnau de Suduiraut.
