CÔTE DE BROUILLY

2013 Les Feuillées Domaine Laurent Martray

Grapes Gamay
Colour Red
Origin France, Beaujolais
Sub-district Beaujolais Villages
Village Brouilly
ABV 12.5%

A delicious Beaujolais that has fruitiness but a degree of class too. Pretty wild strawberry aromas are swiftly followed up with a berry boost on the palate, but the touch of gameyness gives it a sumptuous savoury edge, generated by that time spent in large oak foudres. Rating: 89 L&S (Oct 2015)

On a recent trip to see the ebullient Laurent in his charming cellar we were really impressed by his super Cote de Brouilly. This is made on a very small scale coming from a single vineyard that is no more than 1.5 hectares. Following the hand harvest, Laurent lets a long, slow maceration and fermentation take place naturally - over 16 days, ensuring he punches down the cap regularly during the final week. The wine then spends almost a year in large oak foudres which are between 5 and 6 years old. The result is a sophisticated wine, very stylish, a lovely feel in the mouth and yet so pure and poised. Lots of deep blueberry and soft red fruit and a delicious spicy frame - great gamay for lovers of grown-up Beaujolais. L&S (Jan 2015)

Lots of acidity and sleek fruit. Polish, sophistication and extreme juiciness. Some fine tannins and a mineral streak too. Drinking range: 2015 - 2018 Rating: 17/20 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Aug 2015)

Domaine Laurent Martray

It is a great relief when you eventually track down the bubbly and charming Laurent Martray at his home down a muddy track just over the crest of the hill of Combillaty. He only produces from 9 hectares of vines, half of which he owns, and half he has been renting and working as his own for more than 12 years. They are all in the top Brouilly terroir of Combillaty. He normally produces about 700 cases in total. The Vieilles Vignes is aged in large oak 'foudres'. The combination of old vines and great winemaking makes Laurent Martray less vintage dependent than many Beaujolais producers. His wines have a fabulous depth of fruit with unusual purity and elegance - very impressive stuff.
