DOMBEYA

2013 Chardonnay

Grapes Chardonnay
Colour White
Origin South Africa, Stellenbosch
ABV 13%

This is a really lovely surprise at just 12.5% Alcohol and this is because winemaker Rianie Strydom gained experience making wine in Burgundy, as a result she always wants her wines to display poise and balance and this wine does that beautifully. Lovely bright fig, peach and some fresh tropical notes with a touch of cream and nut. The palate has real freshness, a great core of ripe fruit, a touch smoky, then a rich acid lift to the long buttery finish. L&S (Mar 2016)

An unbelievably good value wine that would not be out of place in a Burgundy line-up - no surprise winemaker Rianie Strydom has worked a vintage there. Seductive aromas of apricot and peach with buttery hints, then a restrained but vivid palate of ripe white fruit characters. Initially made for the estate's top cuvée, it was bottled under this label at the last minute, so a real bargain! Rating: 92 Sarah Marsh MW, Club Oenologique Magazine (Jan 2017)

Sweet and simple on the nose but racy and easy and attractive. Not massive or dense, but very easy to like in a style rather like a Chablis that has gone through malolactic conversion. GV Drinking range: 2016 - 2019 Rating: 16 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Oct 2016)

2013 Dombeya Chardonnay is a breakthrough wine for Dombeya, with a satisfyingly mellow mid-palate balanced by a tart, zesty finish. Take a break from white Burgundy and give this seductive wine a whirl. Matthew Jukes www.matthewjukes.com (Oct 2016)

Dombeya

The Dombeya range comes from a 23 hectare property in the Helderberg, the sought-after sub-region of Stellenbosch. The estate also makes the 'Haskell Vineyards' range, named after owner preston Haskell. Dombeya was the original name for the estate, taken from a wild pear tree which grows locally.

Founding winemaker Rianie Strydom, who developed the wines here, has now passed over the winemaking to Rudolph Steenkamp, who joined as winemaker and vineyard manager in June 2018. Rudolph has been four years as assistant winemaker at Groot Constantia, and has also worked in France.
