2013 Wachtberg DAC Erste Lage Salomon Undhof

Colour White

This is a significant step up in the range with a very attractive weight of fruit combined with freshness of acidity, white pepper, white pears and minerality. As Jancis Robinson said of the 2010, 'always quite graceful rather than heavy'. L&S (May 2014)

Iris perfume and suggestions of beet root and snap pea entertain the nose, anticipating the at once earthy and crunchy impression on a polished, glossy, infectiously juicy palate. Ore-like and crustacean as well as stony, alkaline and saline mineral nuances too elusive to put names on combine for a fascinatingly interactive show. And if this misses quite the lift, clarity and salivary engagement of the corresponding Wieden & Berg bottling, there is compensatory complexity. Unlike most Undhof Grüner Veltliners, this was raised in cask. Drinking range: 2015 - 2028 Rating: 91 David Schildknecht, www.vinousmedia.com (Nov 2015)

The impressive loess terraces where the 2013 Grüner Veltliner Wachtberg comes from, are located right behind the old town of Krems. The color of the wine is pale with lime-green reflections. Yellow apple and pineapple flavors with hints of passion fruit welcome the nose and lead to a quite powerful, although somewhat alcoholic Veltliner, whose juice is piquant and well concentrated but whose finish is slightly burnt and bitter. Good length though. Drinking range: 2016 - 2026 Rating: 89 Stephan Reinhart, The Wine Advocate, erobertparker.com (Oct 2014)

Salomon Undhof

Founded in 1792 SALOMON UNDHOF is a wine estate with a long tradition. The Salomon family from the Wachau produces white wines from the best terraced "Urgestein" sites along the Danube River in Stein and Krems. Today Bert and Gertrud Salomon run the winery. The famous Riesling of the estate thrives on the topsites of Kögl and Pfaffenberg. The Grüner Veltliner Von Stein comes from the steep terrassed hills behind the old town of Stein. The best "loess" soils provide the Lindberg and Wachtberg Grüner Veltliner. All the grapes are harvested traditionally by hand only. Their great vineyard locations and meticulous work in the vineyards are prerequisites for their elegant wines. Wines with finesse and perfect mineral balance reflect the very special micro climate of this lovely river valley. The Estate’s Grüner Veltliner and Riesling distinguish themselves through elegance and consistency.
