NORDRAND

2013 Blaufränkisch Nittnaus

Grapes Blaufränkisch
Colour Red
Origin Austria, Burgenland
ABV 12.5%

Nordrand means North Face in Austrian and relates to where the vineyards for this tiny cuvée. This is the next incarnation of young Martin Nittnaus' 'Sturmt das Schloss' which was a rapid sell-out last year. Again it embodies his desire to 'storm the fortress' of modern over-ripe, over-oaked Blaufrankisch that is being produced so widely in Austria today. Grown entirely on the north facing slopes - the fruit has plenty of slow ripeneing time and is picked when Martin feels ripeness is just reached. In the cellar old barrels are used and the impact of the oak is purely in the softening and rounding of the tannin rather than affecting the wine's elegant, floral flavour profile. Impressive weight of dark fruit, but no lumpiness here, cloves, some tasty spice and garrigue-like florality make this a fascinating, dynamic bottle - lots of thought and clever-intention but minimal working on in the cellar - simply delicious. Martin, part of the next generation of Austrian winemakers, managed to convince his father to let him loose on a small plot of north-facing vines and the result after a long and slow ripening season is this pure and elegant offering with floral notes, blackberry and spice. There is a depth of flavour too making this a very appealing wine. (Top wines from the L&S Tasting) Rating: 17.25 Decanter Magazine (Sept 2015)

The real greatness of this variety, Blaufränkisch, lies in its elegance, its idiosyncratic structure of interwoven tannins, its total linearity and yet appeal to drink, even as a late-ripening variety. Winemaker's notes (Jun 2015)

Nittnaus

Hans Nittnaus was introduced to us by Bert Salomon, and we love his red wines. No attempt here to make international wines from foreign grape varieties, which is not what we were looking for from Austria. These are indigenous wines reflecting the 'terroir' of the region. He is undoubtedly a supremely fine red wine maker, and is now following biodynamic practices which will lead to official certification from the 2007 vintage.
