SPÄTBURGUNDER

2013 Weingut Braunewell

Grapes Pinot Noir
Colour Red
Origin Germany, Rheinhessen
ABV 12%

German Pinot Noir has been hiding its light for too long, and this example from the Braunewell brothers is so easy to like - a soft harmonious nose of woodland fruit and loamy notes, and soft-tannined feel on the start give way to a surprisingly energetic, juicy middle and finish. L&S (Oct 2016)

If there’s a frank but charming unpretentiousness to the best dornfelder and lemberger, a feeling that these are wines not to be taken too seriously, then pinot noir is another matter entirely. Germany is now the world’s third-largest producer of the variety (known locally as spätburgunder) and its best bottles, from producers such as Jean Stodden in the Ahr Valley, Rudolf Fürst in Franken and Ziereisen in Baden, can be every bit as graceful and aromatically allusive as a Burgundy. But spätburgunder doesn’t tend to come cheap: credit to London indie Lea & Sandeman, then, for sourcing Braunewell’s effortlessly lithe and pretty creation at a relatively humane price.David Williams, The Observer (Oct 2016)

Weingut Braunewell

François Breiniville fled 17th Century France's Huguenot persecution to settle in Essenheim, just south west of Mainz.
It took until the 1960's for Adam Braunewell to start bottling the wines from his family's vineyards and, today, he helps his children and grandchildren run this excellent estate and tend their flagship vineyards of Blume and Teufelspfad (the Devil's path!)
