Charles Back's Spice Route project helped start the Swartland revolution that has done wonders for South Africa's international reputation with its emphasis on the Mediterranean varieties and sensitive, terroir-focused winemaking. The region may be full of trendy young things in tiny boutique wineries now, but the original is still knocking out superb wines. Certainly the Top 100 judges were very impressed by this evocative Mourvèdre: "Clove, dried thyme and sage on the nose along with ripe cherry fruits. Soft fresh texture, integrated tannins and a spicy, herby kick." The Wine Merchant (Jul 2015)

Spice Route is owned by winemaker Charles Back with vineyards in both Malmesbury and Darling, North-West of Paarl in the Swartland district. Deep rooted unirrigated bush vines, moderated by cool Atlantic breezes, produce exceptionally ripe and full flavoured wines with great balance.
