Pale , bright gold. Nose abounds with ripe citrus and stone fruits. Apricot is very forward with lemon and lime to follow. Smooth, effortless entry with fine flow yet good acidic grip. Great oak support brings touch of marzipan and some butterscotch. Very drinkable now yet has loads of potential to develop. The 2013 Stellenbosch Chardonnay includes 80% from the estate and the remainder from the local vicinity, hand-picked and whole-bunch pressed, wild fermented and going through full malolactic in barrel without racking for 12 months. It has an understated nose at first with fresh green apple and fresh mango notes coming through. The palate is clean and vibrant with grapefruit, watermelon and apricot notes with a slight waxiness coming through on the finish. This is just a delicious South African Chardonnay. Rustenberg
Vineyards producing the grapes for Rustenberg's wines climb the rich red slopes of the Simonsberg and Helderberg. The style of wine determines the vineyard to be used: Rustenberg has a history of success with reds.
The viticulturist, Nico Walters, and his dedicated team have been working hard to rejuvenate their vineyards by planting virus-free vines imported from France. A small-scale nursery has been started for propagation, providing available rootstock for upgrading, replanting and experimentation. Controlled irrigation is used when necessary to alleviate stressed vines and maximise the quality of the grapes. All grapes are hand-harvested in the early mornings and all vineyard blocks vinified separately, then blended for added complexity.
