2014 Riesling Salomon Undhof

Grapes Riesling
Colour White
Origin Austria, Kremstal
ABV 13%

Amazing stuff! Made along very natural lines this wine demonstrates all the good points of this sometimes 'too edgy' movement. Along with many winemakers, Bert has been tempted to make wine in terracotta amphora, and this fascinating and atypical Riesling is the result. He makes his riesling and without fining or filtering tops up his amphorae and leaves well alone. The pottery urns are buried in the ground below the family's apricot orchards. Magically you can almost sense this fruit's influence. The nose has incredible apricot notes, even zesty mandarin lovely flesh and a mineral tang. The palate is both fresh and dry whilst having a gentle note of sweetness and those crisp fruit tones again. Something different to serve with bolder fish dishes or even with softer cheeses. It's a wine with great purity and a sort of 'natural' feeling softness and clarity of expression. L&S (Mar 2016)

6 months on skins in a clay amphora buried underground. Unexpectedly pale but it does have that chamomile aroma of wines aged on skins in clay. Dry, smoky/salty but still with Riesling citrus purity. Smoky on the palate too and just a hint of tannin. Distinctive, crisp and remarkable. 2015-2020 Rating: 17 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Jul 2016)

Salomon Undhof

Founded in 1792 SALOMON UNDHOF is a wine estate with a long tradition. The Salomon family from the Wachau produces white wines from the best terraced "Urgestein" sites along the Danube River in Stein and Krems. Today Bert and Gertrud Salomon run the winery. The famous Riesling of the estate thrives on the topsites of Kögl and Pfaffenberg. The Grüner Veltliner Von Stein comes from the steep terrassed hills behind the old town of Stein. The best "loess" soils provide the Lindberg and Wachtberg Grüner Veltliner. All the grapes are harvested traditionally by hand only. Their great vineyard locations and meticulous work in the vineyards are prerequisites for their elegant wines. Wines with finesse and perfect mineral balance reflect the very special micro climate of this lovely river valley. The Estate’s Grüner Veltliner and Riesling distinguish themselves through elegance and consistency.
