The vines of Château du Cèdre root in two different types of soil: the terroirs, composed of stony clay and limestone, produce straightforward wines with fine tannins, whereas the more powerful and dense wines come from soils composed of clay, sand and rich in pebbles. Grape varieties : 90% Malbec, 10% Merlot Climate conditions : Early bud burst announced a precocious vintage last spring. Excellent weather conditions were favourable to flowering, suggesting a good harvest to come. June and July were wet, more because of the number of rainy days than the actual amount of rainfall. Summer finally began in the first days of August and lasted until the end of October, allowing optimum ripeness. After the tense, anxious days of early summer, the harvest turned out to be of great quality and brought a smile back to our faces! Our 2014 wines show high density, crispy freshness and wonderful finesse. A great vintage for sure. Type of winemaking : Harvest is sorted in the vineyards and destemmed upon arrival in the cellar. 30 days of maceration with daily punching down of the skin cap at the beginning of fermentation. Fermentation temperature does not exceed 28° C. Malolactic fermentation is carried out in concrete tanks. Sulphite-free. Type of ageing 12 months ripening in 3 use large wooden tanks. Bottled and stored at the estate. This wine is a beautiful deep purple colour with a bouquet of fresh red and black berry aromas on the nose. Fruity yet subtle on the palate, Extra Libre is rounded and full of finesse. The tannins have softened, leaving us with a finely tuned, tasty wine.Winemaker's notes (Dec 2015)

Pascal Verhaeghe

Chateau du Cèdre, widely regarded as one of Cahors' leading estate, is the domaine of brothers Pascal and Jean-Marc Verhaeghe. Pascal, a mathematician at heart who came to winemaking later in life, is the driving force here. Although the son of a winemaker - his father founded the domaine in 1956 - he took little interest in the daily running of the vineyards and making wines until his experiences in Burgundy, making wines with Jean-Marie Guffens, swayed his opinion.
