CHÂTEAU FEYTIT CLINET

2014 Pomerol

Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Pomerol & Lalande de Pomerol
Village Pomerol

The Château Feytit-Clinet 2014 is another strong effort from Jeremy Chasseuil who has reinvigorated this Pomerol cru in recent years, almost under the radar (apart from perhaps the Pomerol cognoscenti and those that bought my tome.) This year is a blend of 94% Merlot and 6% Cabernet France picked between 29 September and 10 October, matured in 80% new French oak. It is very refined on the nose, very subtle, a sample that you have to spend time with. It unfurls with mulberry and seaweed scents. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin that lend this Pomerol a sense of mineralité, but there is a lovely crescendo here towards a finish that fans out beautifully. This is a sophisticated, understated and quite intellectual showing. Drinking range: 2019 - 2035 Rating: 91-93 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (May 2015)

The 2014 Feytit Clinet is fabulous. A wine of real pedigree, the 2014 hits the palate with an exciting mélange of graphite, smoke, tar, licorice and savory herbs, all supported by veins of firm, salivating tannin. Stylistically, Feytit Clinet stands out from most Pomerols in this vintage for its imposing structure, so readers should expect a wine that is more about power than sensuality. There is little doubt this is one of the most compelling Pomerols of the vintage. The 2014 saw 5 days of cold soak followed by 26 days on the skins. Malolactic fermentation was done in barrel. The blend is 94% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc. Proprietor Jérémy Chasseuil and his team have done a magnificent job with their 2014. Tasted two times. Rating: 91-94 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Apr 2015)

Mid crimson. Scented and intense high-toned nose with some savour and raciness. Acidity is fairly pronounced but it has guts and persistence. Drinking range: 2022 - 2034 Rating: 16.5 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Apr 2015)

Ripe fruit gives richness on the nose and a fleshy start to the palate. Damsons and cassis enrich the mid palate fine tannins adding to the suppleness. Fresher and lighter at the back yet the finish has richness and depth of flavour. Drinking range: 2020 - 2030 Rating: 88-91 Derek Smedley MW, www.dereksmedleymw.co.uk (Apr 2015)

Château Feytit Clinet

Jérémy Chasseuil took this property in hand in 2000, and the wines have got better with every passing vintage, truly showing the potential of this tiny 6.5 hectare property, set right in the heart of Pomerol (close to Clinet, Trotanoy and Latour à Pomerol). It's on gravelly-sandy and clay soils and planted with 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, with vines that average over 30 years old. Despite the name, and the statement "mis en bouteille au chateau" on the label, there is no château, just a small well-equipped chai.
The grapes are hand-picked before fermentation in concrete and steel vats, where they spend four or five weeks before the wine is run off for the malolactic fermentation in barrel. The wine is aged for around 18 months is up to 80% new oak barrels.
