Cracking. This is really attractive. Savoury but then good mulberry and softer dark fruit too. Good bit of spice and lovely fine-grained tannins keep this driving along effortlessly. Good and sophisticated. Rating: 91 L&S (Mar 2015)

The 2014 Clos de l’Oratoire has an earthy, slightly meaty bouquet, more forward than its peers but well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, fleshy with moderate depth, gaining more tension towards the finish that completes this Saint-Émilion with some style. Good but maybe early-drinking. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting. Drinking range: 2020 - 2030 Rating: 90 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Mar 2018)

The 2014 Clos de l'Oratoire is a powerful, intense wine. From barrel, the 2014 was tight and unyielding. It is pretty much the same from bottle. There is no shortage of power in the dark stone fruit, leather, smoke, lavender and menthol flavors, but I am not sure the 2014 will ever have the charm that is such a hallmark of the year. Today, it comes across as austere, even if there is good persistence and intensity in the big, saline-drenched finish. Drinking range: 2019 - 2029 Rating: 92+ Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Feb 2017)

The 2014 Clos de l'Oratoire possesses lovely inner sweetness, but it is also a bit compact today. Mocha, plums, black cherries, lavender, rose petals and a hint of smoke open up in a broad-shouldered yet stern St.-Emilion. It will be interesting to see if the 2014 finds a bit more generosity with time in barrel. The blend is 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. Rating: 90-93 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (May 2015)

Clos de l'Oratoire

Located on Saint-Émilion's north-east slope, the Clos de l'Oratoire estate dates back to the mid-19th century to the Beylot family, Libourne based négociants. In the 1969 Saint-Émilion reclassification, Clos de l'Oratoire was ranked Grand Cru Classé. The 10.32 hectares of vines grow on clay-limestone and Fronsac molasse on the upper part of the slope, and clay-sand on the lower part of the slope, a terroir which is enitrely suited to the Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc grape blend. The average age of vines at Clos de l'Oratoire is 35 years, and grapes are all hand harvested into small crates to avoid bruising. Since 1991, the estate has been under the charge of Comte Stephan von Neipperg, who inherited part of the vineyard from his father Joseph-Hubert, Graf von Neipperg.
