RUSTENBERG

2014 Sauvignon Blanc

Grapes Sauv Blanc
Colour White
Origin South Africa
ABV 13.5%

To be honest, I could have selected any Rustenberg wine. I tend to buy them when on special offer, knowing that I will use them in the course of the year. In my opinion, South Africa produces better whites than reds and I think this is exceptional – classic Sauvignon, but with a complex, savoury note that presumably comes from a little oak ageing. (from vines planted between 2004 and 2007 on the highest part of the property, at an altitude of 500 to 550 meters; the Barlows pick riper for more texture, then age the wine on its lees in stainless steel for a few months): Very pale straw-yellow. Lemon zest, anise and a hint of white peach on the nose. Enticing stone fruit flavors show a pliant texture and excellent intensity. Rustenberg did not have a single Sauvignon Blanc vine 11 years ago but now produces 100,000. Simon Barlow described it as the estate's fastest-growing wine. We're fans of Rustenberg generally, and whilst arguably this is another 'same old same old' Sauvignon Blanc, it is very good. It has all the pre-requisite gooseberry, cat's pee and vivacious fruit. The palate becomes quite grapefruity, with clean citrus flavours and acidity, and a nicely balanced and long finish showing a bit of intensity. Rustenberg

Vineyards producing the grapes for Rustenberg's wines climb the rich red slopes of the Simonsberg and Helderberg. The style of wine determines the vineyard to be used: Rustenberg has a history of success with reds.

The viticulturist, Nico Walters, and his dedicated team have been working hard to rejuvenate their vineyards by planting virus-free vines imported from France. A small-scale nursery has been started for propagation, providing available rootstock for upgrading, replanting and experimentation. Controlled irrigation is used when necessary to alleviate stressed vines and maximise the quality of the grapes. All grapes are hand-harvested in the early mornings and all vineyard blocks vinified separately, then blended for added complexity.
