Fantastically high quality cassis from artisanal producer, glass-coating, rich yet balanced, fine and long. The fruit comes from the calcareous plateau at Arcenant in the Hautes Cotes de Nuits, and this soil produces a similar elegance and persistance of aroma in the fruit as it gives to wine. Gilles Joannet
Gilles Joannet is an individual artisanal maker of crèmes de fruits based in Arcenant, in the Hautes Cotes de Nuits - up above Nuits Saint Georges. He describes himself as a 'liquoriste'. I visited him with and the Mousties of Domaine de la Douaix who firmly recommended him, we had a tasting in autumn 2012. The Framboise is unbelievably fresh and scented, a bright long flavour which really lifts a glass of fizz. The star of the show is the 20% vol Cassis, which uses 800 g of fruit per 70cl bottle, and the resulting concentration and purity of the fruit flavour is truly breathtaking. The balance is so good it's hard not to just slurp it down. Highly recommended, it is the best I have ever tasted by a margin.
