As advocates of 'En Rama' style sherries we were very pleased to discover that Lustau were joining in and releasing a series of 3 - a fino from each town in the sherry triangle, Jerez, Sanlúcar and El Puerto Santa María. For us the the Fino from El Puerto is the standout. El Puerto is close to the sea and the flor thrives imbuing the wines with a salty, iodine, flor-influenced richness - a hybrid Fino edging very close to the Manzanilla style of Sanlúcar. Being close to the sea means both cooler temperatures and higher humidity levels than those of Jerez, yet El Puerto Finos tend to be a little rounder, a touch softer than the Manzanillas. This cracking El Puerto Fino is a really exciting addition to the sherry landscape but quantities are unsurprisingly limited - so catch it while you can and enjoy this delicious sherry over the summer. The coastal town of El Puerto de Santa María enjoys mild weather all year round. This has a crucial influence on Finos aged there since the “Flor” grows in ideal environmentally stable conditions. This Fino from El Puerto is aged in our Bodega del Drago located less than a mile from the La Puntilla beach. Only one cask from Solera 347 has been set aside to be bottled, chosen for its delicacy. Fino del Puerto en Rama is a pale gold colour with bright yellow reflections. Its yeasty “Flor” aromas join with scents of roasted almonds and pungent smoked wood. The wine has a very complex, mineral palate with an appealing acidity on the finish.Winemaker's notes (May 2014)
