Origin Portugal, Madeira

Penetratingly acidic and taut - lovely delicacy and purity. Straight as a die, it loses its austerity as you get into it. Lovely aperitif style. L&S (Nov 2013)

*Case price discount: Mix any 12 bottles of wine (or 9 litre equivalent) or 6 bottles of Champagne, Spirits, Sweet Wine or Fortified (4.5 litres) to get the discounted 'case price' for each bottle.

Full stoppered bottle 1,331 g. RS 45 g/l, TA 7.45 g/l. Pale glowing orange. Powerful wood-aged nose, medium-sweet palate that ends so ethereally crisp and dry. Strong whiff of gunpowder/cordite. Orange peel and, despite the alcohol, it tastes dangerously feather-light. Great for sipping on a cold night by itself or with all manner of foods. Long and comforting. 19% Drink anytime Rating: 17 Tamlyn Currin - www.JancisRobinson.com (Dec 2023)

Intense aroma that has the nutty character of madeira as well as ripe fruits, even a touch of lychee, which I have never detected in Sercial before. Fresh and dried pears. Dry, taut, salty and intense without the spirity, raw character of many 10-year-olds. Creamy, nutty, dry finish with a hint of sour apricot. Complex and so delicious and refined for a 10 Year Old. Drinking range: 2023 - 2035 Rating: 17 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Mar 2023)

Sercial is a hard-skinned and high acid grape. 8.5% alcohol is enough to start picking the grapes, which usually happens in early October (2017 being the exception). Barbeito have special authorisation to pick this grape in particular. Based on 12-year-old wines aged in cask. Owner and winemaker Ricardo de Freitas explains that he ‘always makes one part of the Sercial medium-dry which makes for a bigger wine. This is so that the Sercial in the blend becomes balanced and civilised.’ Slightly sweaty, curry powder nose. Super-clean blend of different wines. Rating: 17 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Feb 2018)

Barbeito

The Barbeito family Madeiras are almost unique in their total non use of caramel to colour the wines. The natural pale colour of theise great Madeiras gives an impression of their being light and perhaps less concentrated than others, but on tasting the wines this impression is quickly dispelled. They are brighter and more pure than most other producers but they have beautiful texture, wonderfully intensity and are immensely long.
