PALO CORTADO

Viejo Calle Ponche Valdespino

Grapes Palomino
Origin Spain, Sherry
ABV 20%

'Calle Ponche' is the name of one of Jerez's oldest streets, where Valdespino had one of their bodegas and the solera for this Palo Cortado Viejo was first created. The solera has been kept alive over the years by steadily refreshing the younger casks from a careful selection of barrels containing exceptional quality Inocente. Impossible to put an exact age of the wine, but estimated to be about twenty-five years and more, this solera is also used to refresh the oldest of all Palo Cortados, the majestic 'Cardenal'. A rare sherry and released in limited volumes, this is an intense, dry Palo Cortado with extraordinary length. L&S (Jun 2011)

The NV Palo Cortado Viejo C.P. produced from Palomino from the Macharnudo Alto is feed with specific casks of Fino Inocente and Amontillado Tio Diego. It was traditionally aged in the Calle Ponce (Ponce Street), and if has kept the C.P. initials since then. It’s not age-certified, but the average age of the bottled wine is 25 years. The color is old gold or light amber, and the nose hints at a relatively old wine, with plenty of lactic notes, sweet vanilla, iodine, bitter oranges and spices. The palate is clean and delineated, subtle and on the elegant side of Palo Cortado, ending very dry. Rating: 93 Luis Gutierrez, www.robertparker.com (Dec 2013)

Valdespino

Bodega Valdespino is one of the oldest bodegas in Jérez, originating in 1264, when King Alfonso X gave Don Alfonso Valdespino the gift of land in the City of Jérez. He was one of 24 Christian knights who fought to regain the City of Jérez from the Moors. The company of today was formed in 1875, but commercial activities are thought to date as far back as 1430. In 1999, Valdespino was bought by Grupo Estévez who were able to fund and maintain the traditional methods for which Valdespino is famous. Valdespino Sherries remain among the very best quality available, and Inocente is still the best Fino in the market, as well as being the only Sherry to be produced from the grapes of a single vineyard. Subtle changes to some of the other wines appear to have been for the best. Tío Diego Amontillado is now a little softer in style making it even more appealing and Don Gonzalo has been re-released in the VS range of older Solera wines.
