Smoky, lightly charry aroma from the oak and an inviting mineral/dusty quality and fresh, pure cassis fruit shines out. Succulent, the oak swallowed by the fruit on the palate. Concentrated and so full of fine, pure dark fruit. The tannins are compact but also somehow sweet, giving a firm but very smooth framework for the fruit. Long and fresh. Very good, and impressive harmony already. Drinking range: 2027 - 2040 Rating: 18 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com(Apr 2018)

It offers copious black fruit, violets, bay leaf and Asian spice notes on the nose that gathers momentum in the glass after a deceptively understated opening. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm tannin, the oak nicely integrated, not quite as harmonious as the 2016 but then again, few 2017s are. There is a rigid structure to this Ducru Beaucaillou underneath the carapace of ripe black fruit with touches of tobacco and spice lingering on the aftertaste. It is probably going to require more cellar age than many of its peers but it will be worth the wait. Drinking range: 2024 - 2045 Rating: 93-95 Neal Martin, vinous.com(May 2018)

It was difficult to pin down the main problem but presumably the late summer rains did have an impact here. All that selection seems to have done the trick because, while it doesn't quite have the power of 2015 or the poise of 2016, there is excellent concentration and intensity of fruit. The tannins are also beautifully ripe and there is an elegant balance to the very long finish. This is a triumph considering the environmental challenges of the vintage and testament to the outstanding quality of this terroir. Drinking range: 2028 - 2045L&S(Apr 2018)

The early harvest (Aug 28th - Sept 5th) also meant the fruit was unaffected by late summer rains, while the cool nights helped retain acidity and a good balance of ripeness in the grapes. Estate manager Sébastien Vergne likened the vintage to 1996, the last time he felt there was a similar balance of concentration and acidity in the fruit. Whatever the comparison, the resulting wine is already quite open and showing plenty of rich and intense flavours of citrus, white peach and blossom. Despite that richness, the wine never appears flabby or loses 'zip'. The finish is strikingly long, fresh and beautifully defined. A 'wow' wine and certainly a prime candidate for best dry white in 2017. Drinking range: 2019 - 2027L&S(Apr 2018)

Merlot andThe clay layer in the soil here at Calon saved them from any danger of water stress, despite the quite dry and hot season. And they were really pleased with the Cabernet Sauvignon. Merlot and Cabernet Franc were more tricky and there was much work done. Heavy selection of fruit was made ensuring only perfect, healthy bunches were kept and some innovative work was done with the press wines too. To try and add a bit of intensity to the mid-palate here, they introduced almost twice as much wine from the press to the usual free run juice. This element would normally be added in in January - but here it was blended in immediately and fermented together. Clever idea and the results are great. This added a firm, fresh edge - an elegance and a lift but with no austerity. The 2017 is already very attractive. Fresh and clean, a St Estephe feel and pure line - but there is a lovely balance too. Soft and silky on approach. Spicy, soft damson fruit and delicious cassis jus are held in place by the mega-fine, soft tannins.
