RHINE

The banks of the River Rhine and its tributaries are lined with vineyards, some producing very fine wine indeed. Now emerging from a couple of decades in the wilderness, the brisk light style and lower abv of German wines is perfect for the modern palate.

The greatest heights are reached by the mighty Riesling and Germany produces some of the finest examples in the world. But it is worth giving a try to other grape varieties too. Those worried about sweetness will be surprised to find most German wines drier than they imagine, indeed “trocken” wines are becoming the norm.
