Dry Whites

The dry whites are a bit of a mixed bag in 2017. Some are quite tropical, even a bit overweight for our taste. The successful properties managed to produce wines with a bit more energy and 'zip'. This was often due to the quality (and proportion) of Sauvignon Blanc which seemed to perform particularly well in the vintage.

The fruit was picked on the same dates as the other Clarence Dillon portfolio wines, from the 22nd and the 31st of August. Even at this stage the Semillon seems to come though here, the aromatics revealing layers of peach, mango and even a little buttered toast on the nose, along with a powdery chalky, citrus freshness. It is unusual for Semillon to have much aromatic expression at this stage; it usually comes much later, as the Sauvignon fades. The palate is fresh, pure, textural, clean and bright, with a very polished substance, pithy and broad. There is a fine grip and energy within it, as well as a deliciously vibrant acidity, important in this vintage. This has lovely potential, but is lagging behind Haut-Brion a little, for the moment at least. Rating: 92-94 Chris Kissack, www.thewinedoctor.com(Apr 2018)

The early harvest (Aug 28th - Sept 5th) also meant the fruit was unaffected by late summer rains, while the cool nights helped retain acidity and a good balance of ripeness in the grapes. Estate manager Sébastien Vergne likened the vintage to 1996, the last time he felt there was a similar balance of concentration and acidity in the fruit. Whatever the comparison, the resulting wine is already quite open and showing plenty of rich and intense flavours of citrus, white peach and blossom. Despite that richness, the wine never appears flabby or loses 'zip'. The finish is strikingly long, fresh and beautifully defined. A 'wow' wine and certainly a prime candidate for best dry white in 2017. Drinking range: 2019 - 2027L&S(Apr 2018)

The palate is broad, fleshy, showing some considerable grip and depth, with a restrained acid profile disappearing beneath the weight of all this ripe fruit. High quality white peach and nectarine flavours run though the palate, with slatey edges on the finish that are scraping the sides. It's a great wine that is going to age and develop.
