Dry Whites

The dry whites are a bit of a mixed bag in 2017. Some are quite tropical, even a bit overweight for our taste. The successful properties managed to produce wines with a bit more energy and 'zip'. This was often due to the quality (and proportion) of Sauvignon Blanc which seemed to perform particularly well in the vintage.

This has a very pure, more Sauvignon-dominated nose than La Mission Blanc, showing scents of orange blossom, citrus pips and a little touch of mirabelle richness, alongside a minty lift which may perhaps also be a pointer towards those harvest dates. The palate leads with an immediately confident polish and substance, the middle full of textural weight, countered by a powdery mineral substance which surges within, along with plenty of bitter phenolic character and a super acid backbone too. This feels broad, composed, substantial and is overall hugely impressive. It is a wine of great potential and for me is clearly ahead of La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc in this vintage. The early harvest (Aug 28th - Sept 5th) also meant the fruit was unaffected by late summer rains, while the cool nights helped retain acidity and a good balance of ripeness in the grapes. Estate manager Sébastien Vergne likened the vintage to 1996, the last time he felt there was a similar balance of concentration and acidity in the fruit. Whatever the comparison, the resulting wine is already quite open and showing plenty of rich and intense flavours of citrus, white peach and blossom. Despite that richness, the wine never appears flabby or loses 'zip'. The finish is strikingly long, fresh and beautifully defined. A 'wow' wine and certainly a prime candidate for best dry white in 2017. Drinking range: 2019 - 2027L&S(Apr 2018)

The process of picking was gentle, picking a few parcels each morning, after which the fruit was pressed, with fermentation in barrel. The overall yield was 36 hl/ha, and this wine takes half the crop. The nose presents a very tropical profile, with scents of peach, passion fruit and even mango, wrapped in the polished perfume of oak fermentation. The palate has a honeyed, polished and plush concentration, with a fine grip and a fabulous array of ripe fruits. This is long, grippy and imbued with oak, overall an impressive and yet focused style. Rating: 92-94 Chris Kissack, www.thewinedoctor.com(Apr 2018)

A little grapey and floral on the nose. Creamy with strong clementine flavours on the palate. Not typically Bordeaux Blanc, perhaps, but fragrant, almost exotic. Fresh and lively. Not terribly concentrated but pretty and scented and there is some depth with the lees adding a very slight grip and a light spice on the finish, more in texture than flavour. There's a range of flavours rather than intensity. Drinking range: 2018 - 2020 Rating: 16 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com(Apr 2018)

It has a very attractive, estuarine influenced bouquet with scents of cockle and oyster shell infusing the vivacious citrus fruit. This opens up very nicely with aeration in the glass. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity.
