Cellar Fillers

These represent our pick of the bunch up to (a predicted) £300 per dozen in bond. Who says all Bordeaux is overpriced? It's easy to fill your cellar with 10 cases of drinking claret for £3k. In a vintage as good as 2019, there are some superb options particularly from the Northern Médoc and 'Satellite' appellations of the Right Bank.

Please note that we can source wines in any format if offered by the Château. Just indicate which size you would like in your wishlist order form or email us with a specific request. Bottling charges do apply so please see our Terms for more details.

The 2019 Barde-Haut is an opulent, full-throttle Saint-Émilion. Inky dark fruit, chocolate, licorice, cloves and menthol power through in a heady, exotic Saint-Émilion that very much reflects the opulent style of the year. Today, the tannins are equally imposing, which suggests the 2019 is going to need a number of years in bottle to come around. Readers should expected a potent, flamboyantly ripe style.

Hélène Garcin-Lévêque and Patrice Lévêque turned out a gorgeous set of 2019s. The wines are deep, ample and so expressive. Readers who want to understand the diversity of Saint-Émilion will find that in Barde-Haut and Poesia, two wines that really capture the personality of the vintage in these two districts.

Retains nice balance. A really cool feel is then layered with good, dark fruit - but not sinewy. Just nicely ripened, black-fleshed berries and damson-like edge. Some undergrowth and briary notes too then red plum and blueberry. A coolness on the finish and lovely tensile, chalky tannins add a sense of drive. Smart.

Following to the palateFrom the off this unleashes a charm offensive, with lots going on. Delicious and vibrant aromatics waft from the glass. There is good weight and impact on the pretty nose. Following to the palate where sweet damson and black raspberry flesh intertwine on a soft bed of round velvety tannins. This has good drive and a caressing feel. The fruit here clearly got nicely ripe - but this stops short of being rich. Just a real pleasure to taste and neatly layered. It finishes with a good line of juiciness that asks you back for more.

Ben Sichel has been transforming Angludet in recent years and they now operate completely Bio-dynamically in the vineyards. He's changed the élevage considerably too. The 2019 seems to be a great new marker for this Margaux stalwart. Recommended for the cellar.

Merlot 43%, Cabernet Sauvignon 45% & Petit Verdot 12%. Half of this is aged in Oak (a third new) and the other half is aged in amphora. Harvest started with the Merlot on the 17th of September and ended with the Cabernet one month later on the 17th of October.

These aromatics are very nuanced and deserve time, not impactful but intellectual. The palate is medium-bodied with fine but firm tannins. Very linear and correct in style, it feels fresh and sapid, though I would have liked more flair to show through on the saline finish. Still, I like the grip and I suspect it will give 25-30 years drinking pleasure. Drinking range: 2025 - 2050 Rating: 92-94 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com(Jun 2020)

Some oriental spice adds an enticing hook to the pretty aromatic nose. Laden with cigar-box notes and pretty, deep red fruit. Gets darker and more cooked on the palate, but holds its own. Rich and ripe and warming - but has a charming sleek feel. Just enough edge and lift of freshness, some menthol whiffs help with this. Smart - a little complex than some on the finish. But this is a very pleasing effort this year. Classic yet with great charm. Well shaped and a deep feel, there is lots to like. The best we remember tasting from here.

Vines are more than 50 years old now. (74% cabernet sauvignon, 25% merlot and 1% petit verdot.)
