Completely delicious. A suavely polished feel. Nice red fruit lift on the palate with darker softer flesh too adding complexity and good amplitude. Creamy tannins - then a touch reedy - in a good way adding a classic edge, a refinement. Very smart Cantmerle indeed. One to stuff in the cellar. On the finish it is that feel again that impresses - just enough very soft tannin.

Philippe Dambrine who runs this Medoc stalwart was keen to illustrate the evolution of the work here - constantly refining their processes and getting more detailed in the vineyards. The latest update thgis year has been the new pumps - for pump over that are much gentler on the juice. It is no longer a physical pump - now it is air that pushes the juice gently from the bottom to the top. If this 2019 is the result - then what a great investment!

Some undergrowth and briary notes too then red plum and blueberry. A coolness on the finish and lovely tensile, chalky tannins add a sense of drive. Smart.

The palate is medium-bodied with extremely fine tannins that frame the layers of blackberry, raspberry and orange rind notes. Satin-like in texture, this feels reassuringly long in the mouth with a dab of white pepper on the aftertaste. What an outstanding Malartic from the Bonnie family. Tasted from three bottles. Immediately impressive. Dark and glossy fruit - but nice feel and some good drive. Surprised by quite how pretty this feels. Sweet middle of ripe dark fruit, but super feel and gentle dusty tannins give shape and fresh push. Quite sophisticated. 50% Merlot is deeply aromatic, with good power and intensity. the 50% Cabernet adds some tension and grip and that gently rounded structure and some finesse.

Jeanne Lacombe, Pape Clement's technical director talked us through the vintage explaining that, yes it was warm here in 2019, but that from the 21st September things cooled down significantly and got wetter, phew! - This really helped with the finishing of the grapes' ripening and stopped the extreme ripeness that was inevitable if things had continued as they were.

In the cellar they were wowed by the colour and flavour intensity coming out of the must - so a programme of very gentle extraction followed with very little punching down. They've significantly reduced the amount of New Oak here too which allows for the generous and pretty fruit expression. 10-15% is raised in large oak vats with the remaining juice split 2/3 in new barrels and 1/3 1 year-old.
