It’s a pretty, elegant, incredibly floral wine (no doubt due to the high Cabernet Franc) that’s medium-bodied, balanced, and silky. It’s aging in 100% new French oak, but it certainly doesn’t taste like it, and it shines for its purity of fruit, fine tannin, and undeniable elegance. The This Saint Emilion from the satellite village of Puisseguin is one of our favourite properties on the right bank. It's hard to find another which offers such consistency of quality and value. The 2017 has a lovely rich, plum and violet scented nose. There is plenty of muscle and shape on the palate but everything is kept fresh and well-defined by the wine's signature mineral core - the product of old vines, limestone terroir, plenty of Cabernet Franc and the quiet genius of owner and winemaker Pierre Taïx. Full credit to Fleur Cardinale for what they have achieved here, producing just eight barrels from an unusual blend and using only first generation fruit. This is full of energy and extremely dark-fruited in expression, showing damson and black cherries alongside softly smoked and grilled almond notes. It has great tension, poise and minerality, and I love it, even if it remains an unusual creation and not typical of their usual style. It will eventually be bottled in just 1,000 magnums. The From deep limestone soils, Calcaire à Astéries of course, close to the top of the town. The Merlot and Cabernet Franc were both picked on October 3rd, the former 83% of the blend, the latter 17%. The alcohol is 13.25% and total acidity 3.26 g/l. I find tense black cherry fruit on the nose here, dry and concentrated, but still fresh and lifted, helped by that dusty, chalky, limestone frame. An elegantly reposed palate, cool, fresh, open, relaxed and generous, with a gentle seam of intertwined cherry, cocoa bean, nuts and grilled pips, wrapped up in a fine sinewy texture. A very different tannic structure here, a little more prominent, chalky and firm, leading into a long, tannin-infused finish. Very good. The élevage will be in 80% new oak.
