The Merlot was picked September 14th, the Cabernet Franc from September 20th onwards, the Cabernet Sauvignon on September 29th. The frost only hit a few parcels on the valley floor, so the fruit for the grand vin was entirely untouched. The wine has plenty of sweet fruit on the nose, fresh and dark red cherry with a sweet, perfumed, pencil-shaving and vanilla-flower scent. The palate is cool, precise, tightly drawn, with a medium-bodied presence, quite light-footed in style, with a finessed grip of tannin in the middle. It has a tightly wound bouquet with black cherries, cedar, juniper and a light seawater aroma. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, quite structured in the mouth with plenty of tobacco-infused, black peppery dark fruit towards the finish with quite a long peppery aftertaste thanks to the Cabernet Franc. TheThis Saint Emilion from the satellite village of Puisseguin is one of our favourite properties on the right bank. It's hard to find another which offers such consistency of quality and value. The 2017 has a lovely rich, plum and violet scented nose. There is plenty of muscle and shape on the palate but everything is kept fresh and well-defined by the wine's signature mineral core - the product of old vines, limestone terroir, plenty of Cabernet Franc and the quiet genius of owner and winemaker Pierre Taïx. TheFrom deep limestone soils, Calcaire à Astéries of course, close to the top of the town. The Merlot and Cabernet Franc were both picked on October 3rd, the former 83% of the blend, the latter 17%. The alcohol is 13.25% and total acidity 3.26 g/l. I find tense black cherry fruit on the nose here, dry and concentrated, but still fresh and lifted, helped by that dusty, chalky, limestone frame. An elegantly reposed palate, cool, fresh, open, relaxed and generous, with a gentle seam of intertwined cherry, cocoa bean, nuts and grilled pips, wrapped up in a fine sinewy texture. A very different tannic structure here, a little more prominent, chalky and firm, leading into a long, tannin-infused finish. Very good. The élevage will be in 80% new oak.
