It has a sensational Cabernet Sauvignon profile and offers abundant blue fruits, sweet black cherries, leafy herbs, and liquid violet-like aromas and flavors. These carry to a medium to full-bodied, concentrated Saint-Estèphe that has remarkable purity, a rock solid mid-palate, integrated acidity, and a great finish. It certainly shows the cooler, pure side to the vintage, yet has plenty of textural richness and depth. It should be drinkable with just short-term cellaring and age beautifully. The wine is correspondingly powerful with a robust accompanying acidity that promises a long life. The fruit character is savoury, succulent and extremely persistent, with fleshy blackberry alongside touches of redcurrant and a pulsating freshness that keeps on coming. The Cabernet Sauvignon still dominates of course, at 66% of the blend, but this comes with 32% Merlot, and 1% each Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. This is the first time Petit Verdot has been included in the blend since 2012, says Dominique, which must surely be a marker of the ripeness of the vintage. There was no frost damage of note here, and so the yield was a healthy 43 hl/ha across the entire vineyard. The picking kicked off on September 12th, and was all done by the 30th. This wine took 40% of the crop, the rest going into Pagodes. The analyses reveal this to have 13% alcohol, total acidity 3.2 g/l and an IPT of 68, and the élevage will be in 60% new oak barrels. This glossy-crimson coloured wine has a really striking nose, pure, intense, focused and expressive, bursting with dark cherry and blackcurrant fruit, showing a curranty concentration but not with an overly dark fruit profile, the aromatics instead lifted by a precise and floral perfume. While striking, this is convincing and composed rather than over the top. The palate is rather wrapped in oak (and why shouldn't it be at this stage?), but there is great substance here, great finesse, with polished textural confidence, praline and smoke from the oak, along with lightly desiccated fruits, black olive stones, violets and peonies. The tannins are wonderfully finessed, polished and velvety, while the finish is composed and harmonious. This is one of the most striking wines on the Médoc in this vintage. There is certainly impressive intensity here considering this is the deuxième vin. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannin. It is furnished with pretty blackberry and wild strawberry notes laced with white pepper and a subtle graphite seam. It has good sustain in the mouth with a “Pauillac” inspired finish in terms of discrete austerity and tannic backbone. I admire the focus here and even though there is not huge length this should age well. Tasted twice with consistent notes. Drinking range: 2020 - 2030 Rating: 90-92 Neal Martin, vinous.com(May 2018)

Merlot andThe clay layer in the soil here at Calon saved them from any danger of water stress, despite the quite dry and hot season. And they were really pleased with the Cabernet Sauvignon. Merlot and Cabernet Franc were more tricky and there was much work done. Heavy selection of fruit was made ensuring only perfect, healthy bunches were kept and some innovative work was done with the press wines too. To try and add a bit of intensity to the mid-palate here, they introduced almost twice as much wine from the press to the usual free run juice. This element would normally be added in in January - but here it was blended in immediately and fermented together. Clever idea and the results are great. This added a firm, fresh edge - an elegance and a lift but with no austerity. The 2017 is already very attractive. Fresh and clean, a St Estephe feel and pure line - but there is a lovely balance too. Soft and silky on approach. Spicy, soft damson fruit and delicious cassis jus are held in place by the mega-fine, soft tannins. A real delight. 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc and the rest Petit Verdot Rating: 94 L&S(May 2018)

As was the caseProprietor Didier Cuvelier was quite precise about the degree of frost damage done here. "We had ten vines frosted. That's not 10% of our vines - I really mean just ten vines". As was the case elsewhere in St Estèphe, frost simply wasn't an issue here in 2017. The blend is therefore fairly typical for the domaine, with 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 8% Petit Verdot and 6% Cabernet Franc, very close to the percentages found in the vineyard. I get fresh and substantial fruit character on the nose, accompanied by a convincing dried-cherry character and a vanilla freshness. The palate has a gentle substance, showing a fresh and cool style, with a dry bed of medium-grained tannins and fresh acids. A delightfully clean and pure palate, fresh and filled with elegant structure. This is a good Le Crock in the making. Rating: 90-92 Chris Kissack, www.thewinedoctor.com(Apr 2018)

The fruit was picked from September 14th through to October 4th, and the chosen blend is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, with 34% Merlot and a tiny 1% contribution from the Cabernet Franc.
