The complexity steals up on you little by little, the dark cassis and plum fruit character deepening through the palate with flashes of sage, charcoal, cigar box, graphite and taut tannins. The colour difference is marked between the grand vin and second wine, with the Cos extremely deep damson in colour following a one-month maceration at 30 degrees and clever use of the press. Harvested 12- 30 September. 40% of production went into the grand vin. 3.7pH. IPT68. 60% new oak. This takes 60% of the crop, and the assemblage is 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, 1% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. This is a little more Cabernet than usual, but it is not a significant difference. The analyses show this to have 12.5% alcohol, 3.2 g/l total acidity and an IPT of 61. The élevage will be in 30% new oak barrels. It has a fine intensity on the nose, with a fresh, perfumed, dark-plum character. There are fragrant white flower petals, very precise and fresh. There follows a lovely, very complete and energetic profile on the palate, with a very polished and sinewy precision, a finely drawn structure, around red plums, red cherries, peonies and rose petals, with a delicate finesse to the tannins in the finish. This is an impressive second wine, giving a real glimpse of the grand vin's intensity and style, providing a real sense of controlled power with harmony and direction. Impressive. Merlot andThe clay layer in the soil here at Calon saved them from any danger of water stress, despite the quite dry and hot season. And they were really pleased with the Cabernet Sauvignon. Merlot and Cabernet Franc were more tricky and there was much work done. Heavy selection of fruit was made ensuring only perfect, healthy bunches were kept and some innovative work was done with the press wines too. To try and add a bit of intensity to the mid-palate here, they introduced almost twice as much wine from the press to the usual free run juice. This element would normally be added in in January - but here it was blended in immediately and fermented together. Clever idea and the results are great. This added a firm, fresh edge - an elegance and a lift but with no austerity. The 2017 is already very attractive. Fresh and clean, a St Estephe feel and pure line - but there is a lovely balance too. Soft and silky on approach. Spicy, soft damson fruit and delicious cassis jus are held in place by the mega-fine, soft tannins. A real delight. 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc and the rest Petit Verdot Rating: 94 L&S(May 2018)

It has quite a powerful bouquet that almost dwarfs the 2015 that I tasted alongside. Merlot dominates the aromatics, a mélange of black and blue fruit, later crushed violet making it almost Margaux-like in style. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet core of fruit and crisp acidity. It is quite saline in the mouth and then tapers towards a cedar-tinged finish that expresses the Cabernet Sauvignon. Good potential and a fine second label. Drinking range: 2020 - 2028 Rating: 88-90 Neal Martin, vinous.com(May 2018)

As was the caseProprietor Didier Cuvelier was quite precise about the degree of frost damage done here. "We had ten vines frosted. That's not 10% of our vines - I really mean just ten vines". As was the case elsewhere in St Estèphe, frost simply wasn't an issue here in 2017. The blend is therefore fairly typical for the domaine, with 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 8% Petit Verdot and 6% Cabernet Franc, very close to the percentages found in the vineyard. I get fresh and substantial fruit character on the nose, accompanied by a convincing dried-cherry character and a vanilla freshness. The palate has a gentle substance, showing a fresh and cool style, with a dry bed of medium-grained tannins and fresh acids. A delightfully clean and pure palate, fresh and filled with elegant structure. This is a good Le Crock in the making. Rating: 90-92 Chris Kissack, www.thewinedoctor.com(Apr 2018)

The fruit was picked from September 14th through to October 4th, and the chosen blend is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, with 34% Merlot and a tiny 1% contribution from the Cabernet Franc. The overall yield was 45 hl/ha, which fits with the absence of frost in this appellation. It has a dark, robust, richly desiccated fruit character on the nose. The palate is full, grippy and fresh, with a pile of bright tannin beneath it all. A solidly composed style, a very serious contender, with toasted fruit, praline, cigar and tobacco oak, all sitting on a bed of ripe and velvety tannins. A rich and imposing style, typical of St Estèphe, with good potential. Rating: 91-93 Chris Kissack, www.thewinedoctor.com(Apr 2018)
