Sauternes and Barsac

It's always hard to generalise but the sweet wines of 2017 tend to be quite rich with a noticeable tropical tinge. Where freshness has been maintained they are very good. Sadly quite a few properties were badly effected by the frost so volumes are well down.

Eric Kohler told me The 2017 Rieussec was affected by the frost, losing around 15% of the production although, it was more located in parcels that are designated for the dry white R de Rieussec. Eric Kohler told me that it was a relatively rapid picking. It has around 125gm/L residual sugar. It has a clean but slightly distant bouquet, does not really exude the richness that you expect from Sauternes. The palate is medium-bodied and more promising than the nose: a viscous opening, quite spicy and slightly Auslese in style. The acidity is well balanced and it becomes increasingly lively towards the lychee and fennel-tinged finish, as if compensating for the nose. They worked hard at Suduiraut picking over three separate harvests to ensure the best fruit was picked at the optimum moment - and have aimed to make a smaller amount of super-fine wine. This does seem to have been successful as this is one of the top sweet wines that we tasted. Here they feel 2017 ranks with the great vintages like 2013, 2007 and 2001. The Botrytis arrived on the fresh fruit rather than on the ripe fruit like in 05 and 09 - (which is when you get a particularly beefy style, richer than this.) Very pleasing this has good crunch of fresh pineapple - a clean, saline vein and a seamless rounded feel, without being fat or thick at any stage just the odd waft of butterscotch and dark creme brûlée Rating: 95 L&S(Apr 2018)

This is classic Lafaurie-Peyraguey on the nose, very pure, filled with the scent of crushed mirabelle and yellow peach, a lychee and mango freshness, but also a very fine mineral vein. The palate follows this lead, with lots of creamed mirabelle and peach fruit, vanilla flower, with a quartzy minerality and fresh acidity, as well as the bitterness of the botrytis shining through. This has brilliant poise and freshness, and should age very well indeed. Excellent potential here, but as with this vintage in a very bright, strident style.
