The relationship between Champagne Pol Roger and Sir Winston Churchill dates back to a providential meeting at a luncheon given by the British Ambassador to France some months after the liberation of Paris at which was served the sumptuous 1928 vintage of Pol Roger. Attending the lunch was the beautiful Odette Pol-Roger as well as the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, with whom she struck up an instant rapport and sowed the seeds of a life long friendship between the Pol-Roger and Churchill families.

Pol Roger - Cuvee Winston Churchill

When Churchill died, Odette Pol-Roger was one of those on the short list of personal friends invited to attend his state funeral service at St Paul’s Cathedral. Afterwards, the Pol-Rogers searched for a suitable tribute to him, and found it by deciding henceforth to border their labels in black. In 1984, the firm named its prestige cuvée after him, making it in the robust, full-bodied and relatively mature style that he enjoyed.*

“The first thing that is evident about the 2000 Brut Cuvee Sir Winston Churchill is its finesse and total silkiness. The 2000 is a rich, creamy and deeply expressive Winston Churchill. I don’t see the 2000 being an especially long-term ager, but it is wonderfully radiant and open today. Hints of pastry, spice, apricots and succulent ripe pears blossom on the expansive, broad-shouldered finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2030”

Initially quite restrained on the nose, the bouquet unfurls to reveal white flowers, stone and citrus fruit and a hint of brioche. He palate has a nervy tension and salinity that is the mark of this great cuvee. Give it a couple of years in the cellar to fill out its broad frame. The Wine Advocate 94/100
