A nice little review of Bodegas Hildalgo’s La Gitana ‘En Rama’ Manzanilla has come to our attention, a review penned by the winegang, a fine bunch who often have good things to say about us.

Was £9.95 now £8.50 a bottle.

Intense, fresh and yeasty with briny Marmite, almond and green apple-skin flavours. It’s still the closest you get to drinking sherry straight from the barrel as they do at home in Jerez and Sanlúcar de Barrameda.90 points, thewinegang.com

By way of a reminder, ‘en rama’ sherry is bottled without filtration or fining, more or less straight from the cask. It is a wonderful way to enjoy the immediate freshness of a really dry sherry, although the sherry is at its best for only a few months.

Perfect reflective drinking on a warm late Summer’s evening, a brilliant and bracing aperitif, or a superb and surprising accompaniment to grilled fish.

The ‘en rama’ phenomenon was started by Gonzalez Byass, who released their first Tio Pepe ‘En Rama’ sherry in celebration of their 175th birthday. It caused a sensation and has been released every year since. We still have a little of this year’s release left if you want to enjoy the yeasty masterpiece that it is.

Now reduced, to clear, to just £11.95 a bottle (was £13.95)

Gonzalez Byass have gone on to release a further range of highly selected ‘en rama’ sherries known as the Palmas range. Four styles exist, from a pungent lively Fino in classic style but with more oomph, to a subtle and venerable rare Fino that veers into Amontillado richness. We have a few bottles left from the last release of the Tres Palmas and it’s an extraordinary sherry.

This is only just on the cusp of still being a Fino, moving really into Amontillado territory, and yet the wine still retains some of the freshness and lighter body of a Fino. A sort of near sweetness of concentration, lovely texture and density. Very pure, and lovely succulence as well.

‘This wine comes from the Solera Fino-Amontillado. Ten years old. Few casks at this age are still Flor covered due to a lack of nutrients. There are some rare casks that still are covered by a thin veil of flor that continues to imbue the wine with ‘fino characteristics’. Very rare. The wine will come from the Solera Fino-Amontillado (1st Criadera) situated in Rows 17 & 18, 2nd Floor, Gran Bodega Tio Pepe.Winemaker’s notes
