Susie & Peter and the best value 2012 Burgundies

by Andrew Hooper

2012 Burgundy en Primeur

You will be aware of Susie & Peter. They may sound a bit like CBeebies presenters but they are, in fact, the two rising stars of wine reviewerdom – Peter Richards MW and Susie Barrie MW, two MWs who married each other and take turns to pop up on ‘Saturday Kitchen’ conjuring up wine matches to the cuisine on offer in James Martin’s TV kitchen. Peter is also a senior judge of the Decanter World Wine Awards.

They have cast a drinker-friendly eye over 2012 Burgundy, an eye less impressed by star names, and more attuned to value. We like this, especially as our producers seem to feature quite highly.

BEST VALUE WINES
Unsuperstitiously, they have selected 13 wines of each colour as their Best Value Wines of the vintage – the LEA & SANDEMAN representation runs to 4 of the whites and 5 of the reds.

2012 SAINT VÉRAN En Crèches Domaine Daniel Barraud (£111)

Domaine Denis Pommier

Domaine Joël Remy

It’s not too late to dip your toe into a bit of the value end of 2012 Burgundy. Much has been made of the inflationary pressure coming from such low yields (not just 2012, but a measly 2013 vintage too) and interest from our friends in China, but “we firmly believe there is still great value to be found in Burgundy” say Susie & Peter. And they know what they’re talking about – they’re off the telly.

All prices quoted are the In Bond price for 12 bottles
