2013 Bordeaux 28/4 Today’s releases including Ausone, Cheval Blanc and Léoville Barton

by David Porter

What has been quite a busy day for releases in Bordeaux, has been dominated by the right bank. This includes the first growths Ausone & Cheval Blanc who lead the charge from St Emilion and join one of our perennial favourites from the left bank – CHÂTEAU LÉOVILLE BARTON.

CHÂTEAU AUSONE (£3250 per dozen) has made a tiny amount of wine this year – in both the top wine and the Chapelle d’Ausone (£990 per dozen). Both are good wines in the vintage and they have shown some restraint on the price of this limited stock too. These prices seem very fair and so this is perhaps well worth considering if you are a follower of this esteemed estate.

We were impressed by the wines at Cheval Blanc but at £1625 for 6 this is nowhere near the cheapest vintage on the market, so one does wonder who might feel the need to buy this immediately.

Léoville Barton at £470 is not the cheapest vintage in the market, but in terms of 2013 this is nicely done, a very classically lined claret which will be attractive drinking in the medium term.

Pomerol has made some very pleasing wines in 2013 and Chateau Clinet at £420 per dozen is well worth consideration. We tasted this well, it is relatively well priced for the vintage.
