Solaia 2011 – new release of one of Italy’s ‘first growths’

by Charles Lea

Solaia is the top wine made by the Antinori family. It has also proved a defining wine for Italy, proving, together with Sassicaia, that Italy is capable of producing world class wines from ‘international’ varieties. To begin with, in 1978 and 1979, it was made of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20%% Cabernet Franc. From the following vintage 20% Sangiovese was included, and the current blend is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc and 20% Sangiovese, all from Antinori’s Tignanello vineyard.

The 2011 is a true classic of the style, less tight and a bit more spicy than some vintages on release. Nevertheless slow to open up, it has penetrating concentration in a mid-weight body, a nose which in its tobacco and cedar-box aromas shows a perfect ripeness, but is in no way overbearing. A wine for European palates, perhaps, but it seems to appeal to everyone.
