Will Lyon’s Sunday Times ‘Pick of the Week’ & TV Stardom for Graciano

by Ed H-B

Reinforcing previous accolades for this superb wine from the Maremma region in Tuscany, Lea & Sandeman alumnus Will Lyons picked it out for a perfect pairing with roast lamb in his ‘The Perfect Match’ article in the Sunday Times today:

‘This is the same blend of grapes used in red bordeaux, and for its price it can challenge anything from that region. Complex, with notes of tobacco, spice and dark fruits. Perfect with roast lamb’

Will Lyons, The Sunday Times (Nov 2015)

‘Dark crimson. I would hate to be given this blind and am pretty sure I would put it in Bordeaux. Wild and fresh on the finish – perhaps a little freer, less corseted and less heavily oaked than the average bordeaux at this price. For a wine of this age, it’s GV.’

17/20 Jancis Robinson MW OBE – www.JancisRobinson.com (Aug 2015)

‘The 2008 Monteti impresses for its depth and pure sensual expression of fruit. A warm, inviting bouquet leads to dark cherries, asphalt, graphite, tar and licorice in this rich, dynamic wine. The personality of the Tuscan Maremma comes through in spades. The 2008 is another incredibly reasonably priced wine from Monteti. It will challenge wines costing two times (or more) as much! Monteti is 50% Petit Verdot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in French oak barrels, 70% new.Tenuta Monteti remains arguably the single finest source for reasonably priced wines in Maremma. Drink: 2015 – 2025’

2012 GRACIANO Bodegas Casa Primicia (Rioja)

Grapes: Graciano
Colour: Red
Origin: Spain, Rioja
ABV: 13%

Review

‘This pure Graciano from the great Rioja team of Bodegas Casa Primicia is a very sexy new addition to our list. Not usually vinified separately, Graciano is one of the important varieties that blends in to Rioja – but Iker and his team have seen the quality of their grapes and are bang on in thinking this stands alone without any need for blending. This is the sort of wine we all want to take home. A brilliant week-night supper wine. Soft and flowing but with great spice, lovely texture and brilliantly balanced intensity.’ (L&S 2015)
