2015 Bordeaux – late in the day, Bruno Borie’s Croix de Beaucaillou and Lalande Borie

by Charles Lea

The visit to Ducru Beaucaillou this year was another great tasting, with all the wines singing and showing lovely real Saint Julien character – a fine well-knit delicacy of expression, while certainly not lacking oomph. These two ‘lesser’ wines are good examples, Lalande Borie should be a good drink from the moment it is delivered (‘Very sweet and perfumed. Floral. Light and lacy’ says Jancis Robinson.

Croix de Beaucaillou (£320) like Clos du Marquis, is a property in its own right, a defined vineyard, not a second wine. The issue is the price which is 25% up on the 2014 in Euro terms. But it is still possible to argue that this is good value – certainly compared to Clos du Marquis – we preferred it quite decisively – and others liked it too: 91-92 L&S, 94 Tim Atkin, 17 Jancis Robinson ‘This ‘second wine’ showed extremely well even next to the grand vin’, 91-93 Neal Martin ‘seriously classy’, 91 Steven Spurrier ‘Excitingly expressive’.

Stocks of Pontet Canet are limited, but we are delighted to have secured a little more from Bordeaux so do please email us or call if you are interested in an allocation.
