Staff Highlights

2018 ESSENHEIM RIESLING Kalkstein Weingut BraunewellAlex Robinson – Fulham:
2018 ESSENHEIM RIESLING Kalkstein Weingut Braunewell (£17.95 | £16.25)
“Initially very mineral on the nose with a complex flinty note, this quickly gives way to green apple and zesty pink grapefruit. On the palate the flint appears again and the fruit blooms beautifully on the mid-palate, this time bringing a touch of honeysuckle with it. Fresh acidity and generous texture on the palate round this out nicely. Great value at £17.95 single bottle price!

Toby Smart – Kensington:
2019 SCHIEFER Riesling Trocken Qba Weingut Lehnert-Veit (£14.95 | £13.50)
“This stunner from the Mosel valley has a racy acidity that makes the mouth water, with notes of green apple and stone fruits. This would perfectly accompany spicy Asian dishes or indeed act as a refreshing aperitif.”

Derek Dornan – Barnes:
2017 PLAISIR Riesling Feinherb Weingut Bamberger (£13.95 | £12.50)
“This is for those who enjoy more old school style Rieslings, by which we mean lowish alcohol, fresh, charming, elegant wines with irresistible peachy fruit, a hint of citrus blossom, and the faintest whiff of that petrol note that we associate with the classiest of Rieslings. The clue is in the name – Plaisir – Pleasure.”

Toby Jamieson – Chelsea:
2017 TEUFELSPFAD RIESLING Weingut Braunewell (£25.95 | £23.50)
“This is an absolute gem and the ‘top dog’ edition of Stefan Braunwell’s Riesling range. ‘Teufelspfad’ means ‘The Devils Path’ and shows powerful notes of mandarin, mango as well as lemon and lime on the nose, following through on the palate with high refreshing acidity and a long fruit forward finish. Lovely and dry and my personal food matching would be a spicy chicken curry or some marinated bbq treats. Stefan’s winemaking skills are purely exceptional, and this ‘Devils path’ at a mere £25.95 is a real bargain for such quality. Prost!

Andy Walton – Chiswick:
2018 PIESPORTER GÜNTERSLAY Riesling Trocken Weingut Lehnert-Veit
(£15.95 | £14.50)
“This fabulous Riesling is from vineyards that are quite high up at 220m, the higher altitude and poorer soils are a key factor in producing this light dry white which is full of minerality and has an extraordinary complexity for a Riesling at this price. It has notes of peaches, nectarines and spring honey, It is both fragrant and a touch aromatic. The balance between all the flavours results in a wine which is very hard not to like! Try with seafood (especially shellfish), mildly spiced noodle dishes or sweet and sour chicken.
