PLEASE NOTE that whilst the following may be an entertaining read, the February “SALE” <\/strong>took place in February and has, therefore, finished.\u00a0 Prices quoted below no longer apply, and many of the wines recommended have sold out….<\/p>\n

On a dull February Wednesday evening, a gaggle of enthusiastic tasters assembled in the shop in Chiswick to taste their way through a healthy selection of wines from our February \u201cSALE\u201d.
\n<\/strong>
\nThe evening kicked off with a glass of Champagne Marie Delisle N.V.<\/a> (\u00a317.95<\/span>\/\u00a314.95)<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 a fresh, clean, quite simple \u201ceveryday\u201d Champagne (\u201ceveryday\u201d Champagne \u2013 what a concept!).\u00a0 Then, we moved on to Les Terrasses d\u2019Eole\u2019s intriguing Biso 2005 C\u00f4tes de Ventoux<\/a> (\u00a310.95<\/span>\/\u00a37.95)<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 a Clairette\/Ugni Blanc mix from Provence, surprisingly structured with crisp apple, lemon and star fruit characters.\u00a0 Remi Jobard\u2019s Bourgogne Blanc 2006<\/a> (\u00a318.95<\/span>\/\u00a313.95)<\/em><\/strong> from vineyards in and around Meursault really showed the quality of Remi\u2019s winemaking and the immediate quality of the 2006 vintage \u2013 fine buttery hints, a little minerality and a clean finish.\u00a0 Delicious now, but capable of ageing, perhaps, for another 4 to 5 years or so.\u00a0 The haunting Pinot Bianco 2006 Schiopetto<\/a> (\u00a317.95<\/span>\/\u00a313.50)<\/strong><\/em> showed very well \u2013 charming rounded sweet fruit \u2013 white peach, apple, very ripe apricots \u2013 showing the benefit of three years in bottle.\u00a0 Our last white of the night was the fascinating and unusual Rustenberg 2006 Roussanne<\/a> (\u00a315.95<\/span>\/\u00a312.95).<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0 Roussanne is grape variety from the Rh\u00f4ne valley.\u00a0 Always soft and aromatic, the Rustenberg version has smoky hints, a little sweet spice, with a mix of lemon meringue pie and posh custard.\u00a0 An excellent accompaniment to something mildly spicy.<\/p>\n

The reds were kicked off with the astounding value offered by theLe Mascarou 2004 Domaine des Ch\u00eanes<\/a>\u00a0(\u00a39.95<\/span>\/\u00a36.95), <\/em><\/strong>a lovely, ripely fruited and mildly spiced Syrah\/Grenache\/Mourv\u00e8dre from the C\u00f4tes de Roussillon \u2013 quite Rh\u00f4ney, but juicier.\u00a0 Also with Rh\u00f4ney leanings was the Auro Rousso 2004 C\u00f4tes de Ventoux<\/a> from Les Terrasses d\u2019Eole (\u00a319.95<\/span>\/\u00a313.95)<\/strong><\/em>, an awesomely packaged and awesomely flavoured Syrah\/Grenache aged for a year in wood \u2013 intense, sweet aromas of ripe berry fruit with a dense round sweet palate of spiced berries and hedgerow fruit.\u00a0 The little dribble that made it though the tasting to be enjoyed the next day was even better, with complex spicy flavours ever evolving, suggesting that a spin round the decanter and a bit of breathing are to be highly recommended.\u00a0<\/p>\n

We showed one of the red Burgundies in our \u201cSALE\u201d<\/strong>, the crisp Beaune 1er cru Les Revers\u00e9es 2002 Domaine Nicolas Rossignol<\/a> (\u00a328.50<\/span>\/\u00a321.95)<\/strong><\/em> \u2013 the sort of Pinot that can only ever be made in Burgundy, lightish in body, alive with brisk red berry fruit, and a sort of volatile feel that New World winemakers would run a mile from but which gives the wine such dynamic poise. For drinking soon with lighter foods, or some crusty bread and soft cheese.<\/p>\n

Maybe the most popular wine of the night was Blumeri 2002 Schiopetto<\/a> (\u00a314.95<\/span>\/\u00a311.95)<\/em><\/strong>, a luxurious Merlot\/Cabernet\/Refosco from Friuli (top right-hand corner of Italy).\u00a0 Sexy, velvety berry fruit with a sensually dark underbelly \u2013 like a nice claret that\u2019s just been to Victoria\u2019s Secret!\u00a0 Also very sexy was the lovely Sicilian l\u2019Insolente 2001 Fatascia<\/a> (\u00a324.95<\/span>\/\u00a315.95)<\/em><\/strong>(that\u2019s quite a reduction!), a Merlot\/Cabernet with just a bit more body than the Blumeri, a really polished and serious feel, with enticing dry berry fruit and smooth tannins.<\/p>\n

For me, the best wine of the night was one of our lovely Californian masterpieces \u2013 Blue Rock 2003 Syrah<\/a> (\u00a325.95<\/span>\/\u00a316.95)<\/em><\/strong> from the Alexander Valley.\u00a0 Such delicious and alluring smooth berry fruit, not really spicy in Rh\u00f4ne kind of way, and certainly not Shiraz-y at all, just persistent and refreshing fruit.\u00a0 Somehow, a big wine and a soft and gentle wine all in one go.\u00a0 Ooh la la!<\/p>\n

A brace of non-\u201cSALE\u201d wines crept into the tasting, just for good value\u2019s sake.\u00a0 The Crater Rim 2008 Canterbury Pinot Noir<\/a> (\u00a311.50)<\/strong><\/em> which is an astoundingly good value New Zealand Pinot from the South Island.\u00a0 Aromatic and Pinot-y, a little hint of earthy character, and easy plums and berries fruit.\u00a0 Kiwi Pinot for under \u00a312!\u00a0 Wow!\u00a0 And we showed a cheeky little Lebanese wine Clos de Cana 2002 Cuv\u00e9e Lamartine<\/a> (\u00a312.50)<\/em><\/strong> from Cabernet, Grenache and Merlot vines grown high up on the slopes of Mount Lebanon.\u00a0 Ripe, lightly peppered red fruits with a clean easy finish; much more refreshing, easier, and much better value than any other Lebanese wine that you may be calling to mind.<\/p>\n

A great evening was concluded, with everybody (including us) marvelling at the quantity and quality available in the LEA & SANDEMAN February \u201cSALE\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
