\"2014-Bordeaux-En-Primeur\"<\/a><\/p>\n

With the release today of\u00a0Ch\u00e2teau Montrose<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>at the\u00a0wacky price of \u00a3850\/12<\/strong>\u00a0the show is pretty much\u00a0over. It has been a long haul\u00a0– with many disappointingly priced wines – but there are some good buys too<\/em>, which we feel are really\u00a0worth considering.<\/p>\n

Some FIRST GROWTHS<\/strong> –\u00a0Ch\u00e2teau Lafite<\/a> (\u00a32950\/12),<\/strong>\u00a0Ch\u00e2teau Margaux<\/a> (\u00a32350\/12), Ch\u00e2teau Ausone<\/a>\u00a0(\u00a33430\/12)<\/strong> are still available in small volumes and seem to us fairly-priced. Apart from them, most of our real recommendations in 2014 are for the drinker’s cellar<\/em>. Well-made, well-priced wines that will be a real pleasure to drink and are fairly priced.<\/p>\n

Every commune has given us something to consider – in the M\u00c9DOC & HAUT M\u00c9DOC<\/a><\/strong> there is value to be had, with S\u00e9n\u00e9jac<\/a><\/strong> (\u00a390\/12)<\/strong> in your cellar (incl. VAT) for \u00a311.50, Stefan Dief’s completely overperforming Clos Manou<\/a><\/strong> (\u00a3150\/12)<\/strong> for \u00a317.50, and the likes of Chasse Spleen<\/b><\/span><\/a>\u00a0(\u00a3175\/12)<\/strong> for \u00a320-21 a bottle.<\/p>\n

In SAINT \u00c9STEPHE<\/a><\/strong> there were some goodies – Calon Segur<\/a>\u00a0(\u00a3415\/12)<\/strong> would be right up there on our list but we are sold out sadly –\u00a0(well, 1 case left as we go to print..)<\/em>\u00a0For great value there is Calon’s little brother –\u00a0Capbern<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0at (\u00a3110\/12)<\/strong>. Meyney (\u00a3160\/12)<\/strong> too deserves a mention this is a great effort\u00a0in 2014 and comes highly recommended.<\/p>\n

PAUILLAC<\/a><\/strong> had a very good 2014 – but value is\u00a0perhaps more elusive. Lynch Bages<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(\u00a3595\/12)<\/strong> is great this year,\u00a0a wine with\u00a0real\u00a0personality. At around \u00a360 per bottle delivered to your cellar including VAT, this is recommended. \u00a0The wines from\u00a0Xavier Borie too are super in\u00a02014 – Grand Puy Lacoste<\/strong><\/a> (\u00a3375\/12) <\/strong>and\u00a0Haut Batailley<\/a> (\u00a3225\/12). <\/strong>We also really liked Claire Villars’ Haut-Bages Lib\u00e9ral<\/a>\u00a0(\u00a3220\/12)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In SAINT JULIEN<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>there is much to choose from. For value –\u00a0Ch\u00e2teau Gloria<\/a> (\u00a3210\/12)<\/strong>\u00a0is fairly priced and will repay buyers with very happy drinking in the medium term. Langoa Barton<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0at\u00a0\u00a3285\/12<\/strong> is well thought out\u00a0and will not disappoint in the cellar. One\u00a0of the stars of 2014\u00a0is Bruno Borie’s Ducru Beaucaillou<\/a>\u00a0(\u00a3750\/12)<\/strong>\u00a0said by critics to be close to the quality of the First Growths, but at less than half the price. His La Croix de Beaucaillou<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>(\u00a3230\/12)\u00a0<\/strong>is also lovely and\u00a0perhaps a more realistic\u00a0price-level for many.<\/p>\n

Both\u00a0Ferri\u00e8re<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>(\u00a3200\/12)<\/strong>\u00a0and Brane Cantenac<\/a>\u00a0(\u00a3310\/12)<\/strong> were good value highlights for us in MARGAUX<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>– a commune which had a good 2014. Ferri\u00e8re is a wine we always follow en primeur and we have been richly rewarded when drinking mature vintages. Also\u00a0Ch\u00e2teau d’Angludet<\/a>\u00a0(\u00a3156\/6)\u00a0in magnums<\/em><\/strong> (at the same price as bottles) is hard to argue with – this will be great supper-party claret for drinking in 6-10 years.<\/p>\n

From PESSAC-L\u00c9OGNAN<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0\u00a3140\u00a0<\/strong>buys 12 bottles of\u00a0<\/strong>Haut-Bergey<\/a>, <\/strong>which seems a very fair deal.\u00a0Domaine de Chevalier Rouge<\/a><\/strong> (\u00a3320\/12)<\/strong> is a cracking wine in 2014,\u00a0one for the patient to tuck away for at least 15 years – but if you have space (and time<\/em>) this will be seriously good. Again here the first growth, Haut-Brion\u00a0<\/a>(\u00a32350\/12)<\/strong>\u00a0deserves a mention. In terms of quality in the bottle Haut Brion is the most consistently excellent of the firsts over the last 15+ years, so if you are definitely gong to drink it, this is the one to buy. If you have an eye to re-sale, others may have the edge.<\/p>\n

Over the water\u00a0in SAINT EMILION<\/a><\/strong> value buys are\u00a0Ch\u00e2teau d’Aiguilhe<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>at \u00a3195\/12. <\/strong>As Neal Martin<\/strong> says – this is very hard to beat in terms of QPR\u00a0(Quality Price Ratio). <\/em>Denis Durantou’s wines are impossible to ignore here for hunters of amazing value the\u00a0Montlandrie<\/a> (\u00a360\/6)<\/strong> and the Saintayme<\/a> (\u00a390\/6)<\/strong> are fabulous wines which you will simply not regret owning. Described by Neal Martin as ‘outstanding for the vintage’<\/em>\u00a0Ch\u00e2teau Canon<\/a> (\u00a3375\/12) <\/strong>is a notch up in price, but we feel is still very fair.<\/p>\n

In POMEROL<\/a><\/strong>, Denis Durantou again offers some of the bargains of the vintage –\u00a0La Chenade<\/a> (\u00a350\/6) <\/strong>and\u00a0Les Cruzelles<\/a> (\u00a367.50\/6)<\/strong> are simply outstanding value – it will be a nice surprise when either of these turn up at your door in 2 years time. We also have a tickle remaining\u00a0of Denis’\u00a0highly sought after\u00a0Ch\u00e2teau l\u2019\u00c9glise-Clinet<\/a>\u00a0(\u00a3650\/6)<\/strong>. The other stand-out for us here is\u00a0Ch\u00e2teau Beauregard<\/a> (\u00a3245\/12) <\/strong>an estate really on the move, with new owners and lots of investment behind them – they have made a delicious 2014, which will give much\u00a0pleasure.<\/p>\n

As Jancis Robinson<\/strong> says, 2014 is a super vintage for SAUTERNES<\/a><\/strong> – ‘This is the single category that undoubtedly triumphed in 2014, producing wines that combine botrytised richness with unusual freshness \u2013 so not just massive bundles of sugar, but wines with real energy and finesse.’<\/em>\u00a0 We have put together our usual Mixed Case of Sauternes & Barsac<\/strong>\u00a0(\u00a3265 for 12 bottles or 24 halves). <\/strong>This\u00a0is a mix of four of our favourites, offering both great value and super drinking. Available in halves and bottles at the same price this we think is a great way to buy into these brilliant wines.<\/p>\n
