Among the eager attendees at our Autumn\u00a0tasting at La Galleria were the Wine Gang<\/a>, who wrote up their thoughts in their October 2015 report.<\/p>\n

“London’s award-winning independent merchant has a penchant for the great and the very good from Europe but picks its New World offerings with great care (and success) too, and all of this\u00a0at very nice prices to boot.”<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Among the many wines reviewed were two of our old favourites scoring highly:<\/p>\n

2009 TASSINAIA Castello del Terriccio<\/a><\/span>\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a324.95 \/ \u00a322.95*<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fantastically complex for the price, this is a faithful favourite of L&S and once again shows itself to have a rich tomato pur\u00e9e depth of flavour\u00a0with perky earthy spice plus\u00a0it\u2019s relatively smooth in tannin already. Made with Merlot, Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon.\u00a0<\/em>92 points<\/strong><\/p>\n

2009 GEVREY CHAMBERTIN Domaine Thierry Mortet<\/a><\/span> \u00a0 \u00a335.50 \/ \u00a331.95*<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

A lovely Pinot Noir that has really\u00a0hit its stride with a bright floral perfume fighting through that slightly-developed gameyness. The nicely woven-in tannins really let the red fruit do most\u00a0the talking\u00a0and the\u00a0firm streak of minerality is what shines on the\u00a0long finish.\u00a0<\/em>92 points<\/strong><\/p>\n

Also racking up the points were two\u00a0of our outstanding fizzes\u00a0from our range of grower Champagnes:<\/p>\n

EGLY-OURIET Tradition Brut Grand Cru Ambonnay<\/a>\u00a0 \u00a343.50 \/ \u00a339.95*<\/strong><\/p>\n

Tasty execution of this grower’s\u00a0Pinot Noir and Chardonnay Grand Cru fizz, with the gentle shortbread nose supplemented by\u00a0the seduction of baked apples. Clean, sour and citrussy on the palate\u00a0with bouncy bubbles and a subtle praline finish to lend\u00a0it weight and distinction.\u00a0<\/em>92 points<\/strong><\/p>\n

2007 LEGRAS Pr\u00e9sidence Vieilles Vignes Brut Grand Cru Chouilly R & L Legras<\/a>\u00a0\u00a345.95 \/ \u00a341.95*<\/strong><\/p>\n

In recent years\u00a0Legras, perhaps, has suffered from being in the shadows of L&S’ other terrific Champagne growers Larmandier-Bernier and Egly-Ouriet. But this grower and n\u00e9gociant has a delicious range of its own, so much so\u00a0one L&S employee even chose Legras as his wedding Champagne, we were told. This vintage –\u00a0pure Chardonnay too –\u00a0is in very fine fettle right\u00a0now, with its nutty, malty nudge towards development and yet the lively bubbles and fresh orange tang give it freshness and purpose.\u00a0<\/em>92 points<\/strong><\/p>\n

From our ever-growing\u00a0New World selection they loved:<\/p>\n

2013 ALTITUDE Pinot Noir Two Rivers of Marlborough<\/a>\u00a0<\/span> \u00a0\u00a325.95 \/ \u00a322.95*<\/strong><\/p>\n

With 25% whole bunch fruit and 25% going into new oak, this was never going to be a shy Kiwi Pinot Noir. It has stature and presence, with the bright red cherry fruit tamed sympathetically by the careful exposure to oak. In short, it’s balance between fruit and wood is very well executed.\u00a0<\/em>92 points<\/strong><\/p>\n

Whilst new and just a little\u00a0outr\u00e9\u00a0there was high praise for<\/em>:<\/p>\n

2014 WEISSER BURGUNDER Trocken Weingut K & K Dautermann<\/span><\/a>\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a312.95 \/ \u00a311.75*<\/strong><\/p>\n

Hugely fragrant,\u00a0taut\u00a0and rasping with the freshness of youth, this\u00a0already delivers on juicy kiwi fruit and greengage fruitiness while its flicker of grapefruit and white pepper spice\u00a0provide\u00a0extra edge and appeal.\u00a0Three cheers for Pinot Blanc with attitude.\u00a0<\/em>89 points<\/strong><\/p>\n

But, perhaps the most gratifying, was how well the two cheapest wines at the tasting showed – a pair\u00a0of super-value Spaniards.<\/p>\n

2014 CABERNET SAUVIGNON Camina<\/a>\u00a0<\/span> \u00a0\u00a36.50 \/ \u00a35.95*<\/strong><\/p>\n

Upfront in juicy\u00a0fruit with a light grip to the tannin, this\u00a0might not be very Cabernet Sauvignon in terms of complexity, but if you’re after an affordable and easy quaffer for the party season that delivers on ripe red\u00a0fruit, here’s the answer.\u00a0<\/em>85 points<\/strong><\/p>\n

2014 CHARDONNAY Camina<\/span><\/a>\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a36.50 \/ \u00a35.95*<\/strong><\/p>\n

As with this Chardonnay’s red sibling reviewed this month, this is a useful fresh quaffer for the party season ahead. It holds its own with\u00a0some crunchy melon fruit in a light and simple kind of way.\u00a0<\/em>84 points<\/strong><\/p>\n

With a “by the case” price of just \u00a35.95 a bottle, the Camina wines represent outstanding value – worth having about the house\u00a0just in case<\/em>; and, with the party season advancing toward us with unnerving rapidity, these are going to prove popular by the case<\/em>.<\/p>\n
