These Saint Emilions have have rave reviews and are worth a look.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-24699 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-2207a.kxcdn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Les-Asteries-Saint-Emilion.jpg\" alt=\"Les Asteries Saint Emilion\" width=\"298\" height=\"198\" \/><br \/>\nOur own favourite, which it has been consistently, is <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.leaandsandeman.co.uk\/wine\/2015-LES-ASTERIES-Grand-Cru-Saint-Emilion-23245-00.html?category=261\" target=\"_blank\">Les Ast\u00e9ries<\/a> (\u00a3720)<\/strong>, a wine with a healthy proportion of Cabernet Franc as well as a seam of the hard limestone &#8216;calcaire d&#8217;ast\u00e9ries&#8217; under the vineyard, which was crucial for freshness in the vintage. As Tim Atkin puts it (making it one of his top ten right bank reds of the vintage), <em>&#8216;it\u2019s a triumph: refreshing, nuanced and bright, with fine, chalky tannins and succulent black fruits. <strong>Not cheap, but worth it.&#8217;<\/strong><\/em> 95\/100 (from Tim&#8217;s masterly Bordeaux report available on www.timatkin.com). Also 93 Decanter, 92-94 Neal Martin.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Bad-boy&#8217; garagiste Jean-luc Thunevin has released his <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.leaandsandeman.co.uk\/wine\/2015-CHATEAU-VALANDRAUD-Grand-Cru-Saint-Emilion-23387-00.html?category=261\" target=\"_blank\">Ch\u00e2teau Valandraud<\/a> (\u00a31125)<\/strong>. This is very highly rated too &#8211; 95-97 from Neal Martin, 98-99 James Suckling, 93-96 Antonio Galloni, 94 James Lawther (Decanter) and 94-97 The Wine Spectator. We only saw one sample, in a tasting in the M\u00e9doc, and wished we&#8217;d seen it closer to its home. The price is half the release price of the 2010, and it is considerably cheaper than any comparable vintage.<\/p>\n<p>Also out today is the Jean-Philippe Janoueix Pomerol <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.leaandsandeman.co.uk\/wine\/2015-CHATEAU-LA-CROIX-SAINT-GEORGES-Pomerol-23419-00.html?category=261\" target=\"_blank\">Ch\u00e2teau la Croix Saint Georges<\/a> (\u00a3380)<\/strong>. We were a bit underwhelmed by the sample we saw, but Neal Martin gives it 92-94,<em> &#8216;a sophisticated Pomerol, classy and full of breeding, in other words an excellent wine from Jean-Philippe Janoueix. This is well worth investigating&#8217;<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, at a more bargain end of the scale, there is a Pessac-L\u00e9ognan which has been making great strides.<em> &#8216;This is one of the best wines from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.leaandsandeman.co.uk\/wine\/2015-CHATEAU-OLIVIER-Pessac-Leognan-23654-00.html?category=261\" target=\"_blank\">Ch\u00e2teau Olivier<\/a> (\u00a3210)<\/strong> in recent years, thanks to its greater depth and harmony. Laurent Lebrun has done a great job here&#8217;<\/em> as Neal Martin says, giving it 90-92, and Tim Atkin praises its &#8216;<em>crunchy red and black fruits, refined but grippy tannins and a long finish&#8217;<\/em> rating it 93.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Out this morning are the single vineyard wines from Jonathan Maltus, Vieux Ch\u00e2teau Mazerat (\u00a3630) and Les Ast\u00e9ries.
