The biggest name so far is\u00a0<strong>CH\u00c2TEAU COS D&#8217;ESTOURNEL 2\u00e8me Cru Class\u00e9 Saint Est\u00e8phe (\u00a31250). <\/strong>This is quite toppy\u00a0and it&#8217;s hard not to see\u00a0Pichon Baron as a more compelling buy if it was a choice of &#8216;one or the other&#8217; at this level.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>We liked it and although it divided opinion a little, the critics generally\u00a0scored it\u00a0well. Antonio\u00a0Galloni writes\u00a0<em>&#8216;A wine of cool sophistication and polish, the 2015 Cos d&#8217;Estournel is endowed with striking length and overall persistence 92-95 points.&#8217;\u00a0<\/em>Jancis Robinson is very complimentary giving this 18.5 and noting\u00a0<em>&#8216;Very comfortable. A lovely pair of slippers. Real tension and ripeness &#8211; great combo.&#8217; <\/em>Praise indeed!<\/p>\n<p>As if the price of the reds was not stiff enough, the price of <strong>Cos d&#8217;Estournel Blanc<\/strong>, a minor Sauvignon wine from an insignificant vineyard in the upper reaches of the northern M\u00e9doc, is so completely ludicrous this year (\u00a3888 a dozen) that we have removed it from our offer. We think we actually preferred <strong>Les Arums de Lagrange<\/strong>, yours for a mere \u00a380 per wood case of 6 bottles. The Cos doesn&#8217;t even come in a gold-plated casket at this price, but a cardboard box.<\/p>\n<p>Also out are some newsworthy St Emilion wines. First from Nicolas Thienpont\u00a0is<strong>\u00a0CH\u00c2TEAU BEAUS\u00c9JOUR DUFFAU LAGAROSSE 1er Grand Cru Class\u00e9 Saint Emilion (\u00a3750).\u00a0<\/strong>This is a big, burly but very well-made St Emilion and comes with a big, burly price tag to boot. Jancis gives it 17 and describes it as <em>&#8216;Sweet and fully ripe &#8211; almost Pomerol-like in its intensity.&#8217; \u00a0<\/em>James Suckling was left &#8216;speechless&#8217; and gives it 98-99 points. One for the longish term.<\/p>\n<p>From the Haut Brion stable come\u00a0<strong>CH\u00c2TEAU QUINTUS Grand Cru Saint Emilion (\u00a3995)<\/strong> and their second wine the <strong>2015 LE DRAGON DE QUINTUS Grand Cru Saint Emilion<\/strong> <strong>(\u00a3255)<\/strong>. We started our Haut-Brion tasting with the Dragon and were very impressed, it really held its own in the\u00a0company on the tasting table. Jancis too noted it well saying it has<em> &#8216;Lashings of Charm&#8217;<\/em> and even more so at this stage than the top wine. These are\u00a0undoubtedly the best efforts from this estate to date and so the Dragon has to be a consideration. Indeed for buyers of a serious second wine from today&#8217;s releases\u00a0we feel more confident recommending this than the much more expensive <strong>PAGODES DE COS\u00a0(\u00a3345)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>It remains to be seen whether the advertising of Ch\u00e2teau Quintus in the Royal Opera House&#8217;s programmes has been enough to soften this market for the hefty price tag on the 2015 release.<\/p>\n<p>Hot on their heels is <strong>CH\u00c2TEAU N\u00c9NIN Pomerol (\u00a3440)<\/strong>\u00a0which was well received generally. Tim Atkin gives it 94. Neal Martin writes <em>&#8216;this Nenin has very good potential. One to watch.&#8217; <\/em>Giving it 92-94 points.
