MALESCOT SAINT EXUP\u00c9RY<\/a>\u00a0\"L&S\"\u00a0 has been released at\u00a0\u00a3252 per 6 bottles IB<\/strong>. We were all really impressed by this – it was clearly one of the stand-out wines from Margaux in 2016. Neal Martin gave it 94-96\/100 and called it ‘sensual and voluptuous<\/em>‘ but with great delineation and precision on the finish. It is, he maintains,\u00a0‘one of the best Malescot-St-Exup\u00e9ry that I have tasted<\/em>.’ We concur and, at this price, it’s not bad value either. This comes very highly recommended.<\/p>\n

From Saint Julien comes another of our long-term favourites –\u00a0CH\u00c2TEAU\u00a0LAGRANGE<\/a>. The grand vin is out\u00a0at \u00a3210\u00a0per 6 bottles IB<\/strong>. Neal Martin absolutely loved this\u00a0giving it 94-96\/100 and calling it, ‘a\u00a0great Lagrange’<\/em>\u00a0that ‘almost\u00a0“zings” around the senses, barely able to contain the<\/em> energy<\/em>.’ He felt this was ‘superior to the 2015<\/em>‘ and\u00a0‘<\/em>may well rank as the finest produced<\/em>.<\/strong>‘ The perennial value buy FIEFS DE LAGRANGE<\/a>\u00a0\"L&S\"\u00a0is also out at\u00a0\u00a3210 per 12 bottles IB<\/strong>. Neal loved this\u00a0too (90-92\/100) calling it, ‘full of joie de vivre<\/em>‘\u00a0and commenting that,\u00a0‘you cannot really go wrong with Les Fiefs.<\/em>‘<\/strong> One to buy in Magnums for parties. The Lagrange white 2016\u00a0ARUMS DE LAGRANGE<\/a> (95 per 6 bottles IB)<\/strong> seemed to us to have fared better than many of the whites from the Graves this year and also comes recommended.<\/p>\n

Both the Lagrange releases sit towards the top of our price estimates this year but the estate was badly frosted in 2016 and volumes were down\u00a040%, so these price increases are understandable (it’s also worth noting that this release is still cheaper than the 2009 and 2010). For the quality, these remain great value wines that we heartily recommend.<\/p>\n

CALON S\u00c9GUR<\/a>\u00a0is also out at\u00a0\u00a3382.50 per 6 bottles IB<\/strong>. This is undoubtedly a stunning wine and will be one of the most sought-after of the vintage. Neal Martin gave it 95-97\/100 and called it ‘easily the best Calon-S\u00e9gur that I have tasted from barrel<\/em>‘. Tim Atkin concurs, suggesting\u00a0it could well be Vincent Millet’s best effort to date (98\/100). We were quite simply bowled over by it and can’t recommend it highly enough. The only sadness is that volumes were down significantly in 2016. We have managed to satisfy all our pre-orders at the opening release price but sadly we have very little left. If you are interested, I highly recommend you get in touch immediately and we will do our best.<\/p>\n

Also out is Calon’s second wine\u00a0MARQUIS DE CALON<\/a>\u00a0at \u00a3228 per 12 bottles IB<\/strong>. This now includes fruit from some newly planted\u00a0(2007-2010) Cabernet vines which lends the Marquis a darker fruit core and added gravitas. Jancis scored\u00a0it 17+\/20 which is mighty impressive for a deuxi\u00e8me vin. Another\u00a0from Saint Est\u00e8phe is the top Cru Bourgeois PH\u00c9LAN S\u00c9GUR<\/a>, released at \u00a3417 per 12 bottles IB<\/strong>. We weren’t completely sold on this when we tasted it and at this price it looks relatively expensive.<\/p>\n

From the right-bank also comes\u00a0CH\u00c2TEAU ROUGET<\/a>\u00a0at \u00a3229 per 6 bottles IB<\/strong>. It’s\u00a0a bit over our price estimate, so at the toppy end of the spectrum, but this is always a highly dependable estate and still fits the bill for\u00a0a high-quality Pomerol that doesn’t break the bank.<\/p>\n
