A Visit To Ac\u00fastic And Aut\u00f2cton Cellars"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-29883\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-2207a.kxcdn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Acustic-Trip.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, with two members of the Duddells\u2019 team, I flew out to Barcelona to see Albert Jan\u00e9 of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leaandsandeman.co.uk\/wine-producer\/Acustic-Celler-1072-04.html\">Ac\u00fastic<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leaandsandeman.co.uk\/wine-producer\/Autocton-Celler-2045-04.html\">Auct\u00f2cton<\/a>\u00a0cellars. Many of you will know of his wonderful creations, especially the Ac\u00fastic wines from Montsant that we have been importing since the 2004 vintage, a year after Albert bought his first vines in the region.<\/p>\n<p>We arrived to a beaming Albert who had a plate of Jam\u00f3n and a bottle of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leaandsandeman.co.uk\/wine\/2016-AUTOCTON-BLANC-Autocton-Celler-29394-00.html?pack=33682&amp;producer=2045&amp;page=0&amp;sortOption=2&amp;resultsPerPage=12\">2016 Aut\u00f2cton Blanc<\/a> in hand. A quick snack and a glass of wine later, we took a little walk through his incredible old vine Sumoll, an indigenous red variety that is undergoing a real revival. Albert makes some of the best with his\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.leaandsandeman.co.uk\/wine\/2015-GRAN-AUTOCTON-Vinyes-Velles-Autocton-Celler-24935-00.html?pack=30267&amp;producer=2045&amp;page=0&amp;sortOption=2&amp;resultsPerPage=12\">Gran Aut\u00f2cton Vinyes Velles<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>After twenty minutes the wine was gone and so was the Jam<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">\u00f3<\/span>n. Fortunately, lunch beckoned. In the corner of the kitchen was a large fireplace in which Albert had slow-roasted some local onions and artichokes. These were utterly delicious, seasoned with salt and lots of Albert&#8217;s own olive oil. This was followed by a\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">delicious Catalan stew of Lamb and potatoes.\u00a0<\/span>Of course, there were plenty of wines to taste. My favourite was a bottle of 2009 Ac\u00fastic White which was still singing. It&#8217;s a testament to how well these wines age.<\/p>\n<p>After lunch we headed up into the hills to take a look at the\u00a0different soils that made up the <em>terroir<\/em> of the property. We found huge fossilised clams and other sea creatures buried in the soil, terraces and rock faces. The nebulous description of &#8216;minerality&#8217; makes much more sense once you have seen the <em>terroir<\/em> up close.<\/p>\n<p>At dinner we were joined by Albert\u2019s lovely family and we feasted on &#8216;<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\"><em>Cal\u00e7ot<\/em>&#8216;, an early winter vegetable that looks rather like a large spring onion<\/span>. They are charred over wood and eaten with freshly made Romesco. It\u2019s a messy affair but thoroughly enjoyable and incredibly tasty. Then came all the meat (sausage, lamb, black pudding, pork, chorizo), fried artichokes, more bread, cheese\u2026it was a feast! Albert generously opened a bottle of 1999 Mas Vilella which completely stole the show.<\/p>\n<p>The next day we headed off to Montsant about 60km away. This is where it all began for Albert so I was very excited to see the vineyards that put him on the map. His sites are spread like a patchwork all over the region so we visited a few of Albert&#8217;s favourite parcels as well as some new plots he is working.\u00a0There is no glamorous tasting room out here; just two barrels and a great view of the vines. We tasted through all the new vintages &#8211; 2016 for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.leaandsandeman.co.uk\/wine\/2016-ACUSTIC-BLANC-Acustic-Celler-27545-00.html?pack=31666&amp;producer=1072&amp;page=0&amp;sortOption=2&amp;resultsPerPage=12\">Ac\u00fastic White<\/a> &amp; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leaandsandeman.co.uk\/wine\/2016-ACUSTIC-Vinyes-Velles-Nobles-Acustic-Celler-30311-00.html?pack=34853&amp;producer=1072&amp;page=0&amp;sortOption=2&amp;resultsPerPage=12\">Ac\u00fastic Red<\/a>, 2015 for the Brao &amp; Auditori both of which will arrive in the UK next year. These were all delightful, beautifully balanced and a joy to drink.\u00a0The Ac\u00fastics are ready to go but will keep well for at least 10 years. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leaandsandeman.co.uk\/wine\/2014-BRAO-Vinyes-Velles-Nobles-Acustic-Celler-24450-00.html?pack=29677&amp;producer=1072&amp;page=0&amp;sortOption=2&amp;resultsPerPage=12\">Brao<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.leaandsandeman.co.uk\/wine\/2014-AUDITORI-Vinyes-Velles-Magiques-Acustic-Celler-27610-00.html?pack=31746&amp;producer=1072&amp;page=0&amp;sortOption=2&amp;resultsPerPage=12\">Auditori<\/a> were delicious but would benefit from time in the cellar and will keep for at least 15-20 years.<\/p>\n<p>Albert is a joy to be around. He\u2019s an extremely humble man, a true gent and of course a brilliant winemaker. His passion for nature, viticulture and\u00a0oenology is infectious. He often says that the essence of good winemaking is to let the vines do all the work. \u201c\u202695% in the vineyard, 5% in the winery\u201d. This minimal intervention approach has been employed since Ac\u00fastic&#8217;s inception in 2003, where organics &amp; biodynamics are common practices. He will be officially certified from the 2017 vintage onwards.<\/p>\n<p>It was a great privilege to visit these vineyards, taste these outstanding wines, and get a better understanding of Albert\u2019s vision for the estate. A\u00a0truly unforgettable trip!
