Mind you, a full eight lessons and carols does bring on a thirst, and the chill can seep in.<\/p>\n<p>Back at the house we usually start with something a little warming &#8211; like a glass of <span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a title=\"MADEIRA Sercial 10 Year Old Reserva Velha Barbeito\" href=\"https:\/\/www.leaandsandeman.co.uk\/wine\/MADEIRA-Sercial-10-Year-Old-Reserva-Velha-Barbeito-18233-00.html?pack=22510&amp;term=barbeito+serc&amp;page=\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">MADEIRA Sercial 10 Year Old Barbeito<\/span><\/a><\/span>. This year, with it being wet rather than cold, we may go straight to Champagne. Something gentle and rounded\u00a0you can drink easily, perhaps &#8211; <span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a title=\"BARNAUT Blanc de Noirs Brut Grand Cru Bouzy\" href=\"https:\/\/www.leaandsandeman.co.uk\/wine\/BARNAUT-Blanc-de-Noirs-Brut-Grand-Cru-Bouzy-3694-00.html?pack=1730&amp;term=barnaut&amp;page=\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">BARNAUT Blanc de Noirs Brut Grand Cru Bouzy<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #333399;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Nothing too heavy for dinner, with the following day planned around Christmas lunch. So probably traditional fish, and white. Again something gentle, not too challenging, something that while fresh, has a warmth of ripe fruit and a slight fullness of flavour:\u00a0<span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a title=\"2010 POUILLY FUISS\u00c9 Vieilles Vignes Les Crays Domaine Daniel Barraud\" href=\"https:\/\/www.leaandsandeman.co.uk\/wine\/2010-POUILLY-FUISSE-Vieilles-Vignes-Les-Crays-Domaine-Daniel-Barraud-15783-00.html?pack=20002&amp;term=crays&amp;page=\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">2010 POUILLY FUISS\u00c9 Vieilles Vignes Les Crays Domaine Daniel Barraud<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #333399;\">\u00a0<\/span>would be perfect. My wife Helena\u00a0is not a great white drinker, unless it&#8217;s Riesling, so maybe we will put a bottle of the new favourite <span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a title=\"2010 SERRIGER HERRENBERG Riesling Sp\u00e4tlese Feinherb QmP Weingut Dr Siemens\" href=\"https:\/\/www.leaandsandeman.co.uk\/wine\/2010-SERRIGER-HERRENBERG-Riesling-Spatlese-Feinherb-QmP-Weingut-Dr-Siemens-17442-00.html?pack=21960&amp;term=serriger&amp;page=\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">2010 SERRIGER HERRENBERG Riesling Sp\u00e4tlese from Dr Siemens<\/span><\/a><\/span> on standby.\u00a0And there had better be some red so we can have some cheese. Maybe\u00a0<span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a title=\"2011 BARBERA D'ALBA Campass Cigliuti\" href=\"https:\/\/www.leaandsandeman.co.uk\/wine\/2011-BARBERA-D-ALBA-Campass-Cigliuti-17735-00.html?pack=22094&amp;term=campass&amp;page=\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">2011 BARBERA D&#8217;ALBA Campass Cigliuti <\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">with its juicy fruit and velvet tannins<\/span><\/span>. The boys in the shops are fascinated by the fact that the labels of this are not only lavender-coloured but lavender-scented, although Claudia (the winemaker) denies any intention\u00a0here.\u00a0That might be it, but I have packed a bottle of <span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a title=\"Springbank 15 yo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.leaandsandeman.co.uk\/wine\/SPRINGBANK-15-Year-Old-Campbeltown-4156-00.html?pack=4378&amp;term=springbank&amp;page=\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Springbank<\/span><\/a><\/span>, just in case Richard\u00a0feels like a little night-cap.<\/p>\n<p>Christmas day. Stockings and the temptation to drink the <span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a title=\"Foxdenton Sloe Gin\" href=\"https:\/\/www.leaandsandeman.co.uk\/wine\/FOXDENTON-Sloe-Gin-Foxdenton-Estate-13076-00.html?pack=16297&amp;term=sloe+gin&amp;page=\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">miniature of Sloe Gin <\/span><\/a><\/span>before breakfast is resisted, despite the need for more sleep which calls for almost any form of stimulant. Still, coffee is probably better. Breakfast will remain alcohol-free too, although if you were chez Michael Broadbent, you might find a glass of Buck&#8217;s Fizz useful at this point. Don&#8217;t be extravagant with champagne if you do &#8211; a spot of <span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a title=\"JEAN-LOUIS DENOIS M\u00e9thode Traditionelle Chardonnay-Pinot Noir Brut\" href=\"https:\/\/www.leaandsandeman.co.uk\/wine\/JEAN-LOUIS-DENOIS-Methode-Traditionelle-Chardonnay-Pinot-Noir-Brut-7335-00.html?pack=940&amp;term=denois&amp;page=\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">JEAN-LOUIS DENOIS M\u00e9thode Traditionelle Chardonnay-Pinot Noir<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #333399;\"> Brut <\/span>will do more than adequately.<\/p>\n<p>Christmas day breakfast is always rather a hopping affair, sharing the kitchen with prepping of vegetables, the turkey safe in the Aga. Then everyone is off to <a title=\"Cornwell\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cornwell,_Oxfordshire\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Cornwell<\/strong><\/a> for the service there. Perhaps I will be allowed to stay behind on basting duty.<\/p>\n<p>After church it&#8217;s back to the house to prepare for the lunch\u00a0and get the fires lit, with the usual amusement when the one in the dining room blows all its smoke back into the room. We are still trying to shoo it out when the rest of the family arrive for lunch.<\/p>\n<p>My mother-in-law once stunned us all by producing\u00a0pan-fried fois gras on brioche toast\u00a0at this point, something I&#8217;d very much like to become a family tradition. In which case <span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a title=\"2006 VIR\u00c9-CLESS\u00c9 S\u00e9lection EJ Th\u00e9venet Domaine de la Bon Gran\" href=\"https:\/\/www.leaandsandeman.co.uk\/wine\/2006-VIRE-CLESSE-Selection-EJ-Thevenet-Domaine-de-la-Bon-Gran-18804-00.html?pack=23314&amp;term=vire+bon&amp;page=\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">2006 VIR\u00c9-CLESS\u00c9 S\u00e9lection EJ Th\u00e9venet Domaine de la Bon Gran<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #333399;\"> <span style=\"color: #333333;\">would be perfect.\u00a0For those too squeamish for this treat, smoked salmon on brown bread with<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\">\u00a0something<\/span> lively and fresh to lift the taste buds &#8211; <span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a title=\"LARMANDIER-BERNIER Terre de Vertus Non Dos\u00e9 1er Cru\" href=\"https:\/\/www.leaandsandeman.co.uk\/wine\/LARMANDIER-BERNIER-Terre-de-Vertus-Non-Dose-1er-Cru-9762-00.html?pack=11852\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">LARMANDIER-BERNIER Terre de Vertus<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0will do that job beautifully.<\/p>\n<p>Christmas lunch itself would be accompanied by a Burgundy if it was me choosing, but\u00a0Sam having set a high bar a few years ago, I suspect\u00a0Richard will want to &#8211; well not <em>compete<\/em> exactly, but <em>show willing<\/em>.\u00a0Maybe\u00a0<span style=\"color: #333399;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a title=\"2010 CH\u00c2TEAU HAUT PLANTEY Grand Cru Saint Emilion\" href=\"https:\/\/www.leaandsandeman.co.uk\/wine\/2010-CHATEAU-HAUT-PLANTEY-Grand-Cru-Saint-Emilion-18876-00.html?pack=24094&amp;\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">2010 CH\u00c2TEAU HAUT PLANTEY Grand Cru Saint Emilion<\/span><\/a> <\/span>&#8211; the new\u00a0property owned by\u00a0Jacques &#8216;Le Pin&#8217; Thienpont &#8211; or something even grander from the cellar.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>I apparently have really odd tastes in that I still love Christmas pudding. Would\u00a0I eat it without brandy butter? Possibly not.\u00a0But I&#8217;d be the first to admit it does not really go with much. This might not necessarily preclude having one glass of\u00a0<span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a title=\"2004 COTEAUX DU LAYON BEAULIEU L'Anclaie Ch\u00e2teau de Pierre Bise\" href=\"https:\/\/www.leaandsandeman.co.uk\/wine\/2004-COTEAUX-DU-LAYON-BEAULIEU-L-Anclaie-Chateau-de-Pierre-Bise-16487-00.html?pack=20738\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">2004 COTEAUX DU LAYON BEAULIEU L&#8217;Anclaie Ch\u00e2teau de Pierre Bise <\/span><\/a><\/span>with it &#8211;\u00a0or perhaps more\u00a0as a chaser.<\/p>\n<p>Time for a quick\u00a0walk\u00a0to the <span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a title=\"The Rollright Stones\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rollright_Stones\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Rollright Stones<\/span><\/a><\/span> before dark, to see if the <strong>Whispering Knights\u00a0<\/strong>have got anything to say about the solstice and the magic of the now lengthening days.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog-2207a.kxcdn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Whispering_Knights.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10896\" alt=\"Whispering_Knights\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-2207a.kxcdn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Whispering_Knights.png\" width=\"499\" height=\"235\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Dinner is so much more restrained, but no slacking on the vinous front please. Time for a sip of a treat Champagne like\u00a0the perfectly mature and complex\u00a0<span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a title=\"1996 LEGRAS Cuv\u00e9e Saint Vincent Brut Grand Cru Chouilly\" href=\"https:\/\/www.leaandsandeman.co.uk\/wine\/1996-LEGRAS-Cuvee-Saint-Vincent-Brut-Grand-Cru-Chouilly-5425-00.html?pack=22391\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">1996 LEGRAS Cuv\u00e9e Saint Vincent Brut Grand Cru<\/span><\/a><\/span> to get one back on form. And after Claret for lunch, perhaps a contemplative Pinot for dinner. This could be one of the ethereally scented (and amazingly low-alcohol) wines from Piero Incisa della Rochetta&#8217;s Chacra estate. The <a title=\"2010 CHACRA '55' PINOT NOIR\" href=\"https:\/\/www.leaandsandeman.co.uk\/wine\/2010-CHACRA-55-PINOT-NOIR-Bodega-Chacra-15797-00.html?pack=20021&amp;term=chacra+pinot&amp;page=\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">2010 CHACRA &#8217;55&#8217; PINOT NOIR Bodega Chacra<\/span><\/a> is showing quite beautifully now. Or a slightly earthier Burgundian classic like\u00a0<span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a title=\"2007 VOLNAY 1er Cru Chevrets Domaine Henri Boillot\" href=\"https:\/\/www.leaandsandeman.co.uk\/wine\/2007-VOLNAY-1er-Cru-Chevrets-Domaine-Henri-Boillot-12178-00.html?pack=15125\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">2007 VOLNAY 1er Cru Chevrets Domaine Henri Boillot<\/span><\/a><\/span>. And then of course there has to be Port <em>somewhere<\/em> on Christmas day:- a spot of <a title=\"19970 DOW\" href=\"https:\/\/www.leaandsandeman.co.uk\/wine\/1970-DOW-5784-00.html?pack=7351&amp;term=1970+dow&amp;page=\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">1970 DOW<\/span><\/span><\/a>. If you are sensible you will avoid the Cognac, but who is by this stage? (Especially when it&#8217;s <span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a title=\"MOYET Fine Champagne\" href=\"https:\/\/www.leaandsandeman.co.uk\/wine\/MOYET-Fine-Champagne-4929-00.html?pack=5227&amp;term=MOYET+FINE&amp;page=\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">MOYET Fine Champagne<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>After a Boxing Day of wind and rain and being outdoors all the same, with perhaps nothing more than a pint of <span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a title=\"Hook Norton Beers\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hooky.co.uk\/our-beers\/cask-ales.ashx\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Hooky<\/span><\/a><\/span> or a nip of\u00a0<a title=\"SIPSMITH Sloe Gin\" href=\"https:\/\/www.leaandsandeman.co.uk\/wine\/SIPSMITH-Sloe-Gin-14246-00.html?pack=17850&amp;term=SIPS+SLOE&amp;page=\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">SIPSMITH Sloe Gin<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">,<span style=\"color: #333333;\"> a glass of Valdespino&#8217;s<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a title=\"INOCENTE Fino Valdespino\" href=\"https:\/\/www.leaandsandeman.co.uk\/wine\/INOCENTE-Fino-Valdespino-8459-00.html?pack=10033&amp;term=inocente&amp;page=\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">INOCENTE Fino<\/span><\/a><\/span> <span style=\"color: #333399;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">will be welcome early evening, and allow you to settle down in front of the fire with a book. After a long cross-country drive, I know my nephews will want to take their uncles for a\u00a0<strong><em>prupper jarb<\/em><\/strong>, so off to the pub to find it:-<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.staustellbrewery.co.uk\/beers\/draught-beers.html#pj\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10898\" alt=\"Proper Job\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-2207a.kxcdn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Proper-Job.png\" width=\"499\" height=\"449\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>It usually proves to be just what it says on the pump.<\/p>\n<p>The next morning there&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>surfing in Harlyn Bay<\/strong>.
