Few areas of Bordeaux arouse such interest and demand as Pomerol<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Next door is a slightly less well favoured terroir which nevertheless produces wines from Merlot, or Merlot and Cabernet Franc, like Pomerol, and on clay soils, like Pomerol:-<\/p>\n

\"Roadsign-lalande-de-pomerol\"<\/a><\/p>\n

We first encountered Vieux Ch\u00e2teau Gachet<\/strong> when we took the lush and voluptuous 2009 vintage (you may be lucky enough to find the odd bottle or two still kicking around in one of our shops<\/a>).\u00a0 The 2010 which turned out to be yet another top-notch Bordeaux vintage albeit with a little more classic balance.<\/p>\n

\"2010-VIEUX-CHATEAU-GACHET-Lalande-de-Pomerol-Lea-Sandeman\"<\/a><\/div>\n

70% Merlot<\/strong>, 20% Cabernet Franc<\/strong> and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon<\/strong>, harvested by hand, and aged in oak for 12 months (20% new).\u00a0 The Vieux Ch\u00e2teau Gachet 2010<\/strong><\/a> is a deep dark colour, still velvet purple at the edges; the nose is rich with cherry aromas and the soft sweetness of oak; the palate is plump and filling, dark fruits and cherry, hints of sweet spice, there are still some plump tannins but these are balanced beautifully by the fruit.\u00a0 Drinking well now, it will age interestingly for another 5+ years.<\/p>\n

All this Right Bank wonderfulness is yours for just \u00a318.95 a bottle (\u00a316.95 by the dozen – <\/strong>as always, this is also the price per bottle\u00a0if included in a mixed\u00a0dozen of your choosing.)<\/p>\n

We also have the rather more solidly structured 2009 CH\u00c2TEAU PERRON Lalande de Pomerol<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0which we have followed for a dozen vintages and which is a long-term favourite – this is \u00a317.95 per single bottle, \u00a315.95 at the ‘case’ price.<\/p>\n

Pomerol is very small and so with high demand, the prices are also high (think, P\u00e9trus, le Pin, VCC etc.). It\u00a0really is a sleepy backwater, tucked in next to the much larger Saint Emilion<\/strong>. It\u00a0would take about twenty minutes to walk from one side to the other \u2013 so, whilst saturated with vineyard, Pomerol\u2019s output is very small.<\/p>\n

Lalande-de-Pomerol<\/strong> \u2013 is a slightly larger vineyard area to the north of Pomerol itself and is an\u00a0obvious place to look for Pomerol alternatives.\u00a0 The wines follow a similar formula to Pomerol proper with reliance on Merlot for immediate plump plummy fruit.\u00a0 Tread with care, however, with the magic word Pomerol <\/strong>on the label, wines can be a little more expensive than they ought, with quality that doesn\u2019t always match the price ticket.\u00a0 Fortunately you have LEA & SANDEMAN<\/strong> to tread carefully on your behalf and find wines that tick all the Pomerol-esque boxes and from some of these\u00a0you\u2019ll still get change from a \u00a320 note.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Of course, when talking claret,\u00a0we should add that\u00a0the excellent LEA & SANDEMAN Bordeaux 2009<\/strong><\/a> and it’s seductive premium version LEA & SANDEMAN Bordeaux 2009 ‘The Director’s Cut’<\/strong><\/a>, both come from a vineyard in the ‘palus<\/em>‘, on the banks of the Dordogne composed of clays washed downriver from Pomerol<\/strong>, over a calcareous bedrock which forms the main soil of Fronsac.<\/p>\n

If it really must be Pomerol<\/strong>, try\u00a0Ch\u00e2teau Toulifaut 2009 Pomerol <\/a>(\u00a323.95) <\/strong>Ch\u00e2teau l’Enclos 2008 Pomerol<\/a> (\u00a329.95), <\/strong>and, throwing all caution to the winds, Vieux Ch\u00e2teau Certan 2007 Pomerol<\/a> (\u00a392.95) <\/strong><\/p>\n
