Piero&#8217;s friendship with\u00a0Hans Vinding Diers, the winemaker of Argentina&#8217;s best known Malbec, Noemia, took him to the Rio Negro in Patagonia, where he was to\u00a0discover an extraordinary old vineyard planted with Pinot Noir on their original pre-phylloxera rootstock. The\u00a0first vines were planted in 1935, with a second vineyard in 1955, producing tiny yields of incredible quality fruit. Together with Vinding-Diers, Piero\u00a0has planted more vines, including some Merlot,\u00a0built\u00a0a winery and is producing\u00a0a range of wines\u00a0of the highest quality.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">&#8216;Chacra represents the boutique of the boutique, turning out handcrafted, delicately styled Pinot Noirs that are worth the effort to find.&#8217;<span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211; <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i>James Molesworth, Wine Spectator <\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This is a rare\u00a0opportunity to taste all three Pinot Noirs, including back vintages, as well as the recently released &#8216;Mainque&#8217; Merlot, and listen to Piero&#8217;s fascinating story of discovery and passionate winemaking in this extraordinarily beautiful landscape. Barda is warm, creamy and intense. An emphasis on balanced raspberry and cherry favours mixed with rose hip and freshness give it Old World personality. A very drinkable and honest style of red wine. Good now into 2011.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Chacra &#8217;55&#8217;:<\/strong><\/span> <em>From vines planted in 1955, this is a rose-tinted Pinot with a woven, integrated bouquet of toast, mineral and berry fruits. There&#8217;s more Burgundian character here than New World, so it pours on the cerebral scents and flavours of tea, rose hip, strawberry and raspberry. Reserved in style, but good to drink now and over the next few years. If $100 seems to be a lot to spend on Argentinian Pinot, you should give it a try at some point; you may be convinced otherwise.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Chacra &#8217;32&#8217;:<\/strong><\/span> <em>This wine from vines planted in 1932 is linear and intense to the core. It is an age worthy specimen with fine acidity and tight structure. Now, it is juicy and a little sharp, with piercing black cherry fruit and spice galore. Best to wait for another year or two to begin drinking, and beyond that it may last for another 5-10 years if well cellared.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">&#8216;When you\u2019re making wine on such a small, handcrafted scale as Piero is, there is no question that it\u2019s going to be a fine one.
