CHÂTEAU FIGEAC

1989 1er Grand Cru Classé Saint Emilion

Grapes Cab Franc, Cab Sauv, Merlot
Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Saint Emilion & Satellites
Village Saint Emilion
Classification 1er Grand Cru Classé

The 1989 Figeac is poured from imperials direct from the château's reserves. This is showing slight bricking on the rim. The nose is pretty backward due mainly to the large format. Blackcurrant pastilles, liquorice, cedar and cloves blossom on the nose; the bouquet is fully mature and open, just decaying a little with aeration over the course of an evening. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins; a welcome splash of balsamic lends a little edge. There is a touch of rusticity, while the finish does not "kick on" as you might have hoped, hence my modest score for a great Right Bank growing season. Tasted at the château. The 1989 Figeac, picked September 11 to 29, was tasted with winemaker Frédéric Faye at the estate, although it was clearly not representative. Another bottle tasted a couple of weeks later in London chimes with my several previous encounters. Warm gravel, clove and a hint of licorice gradually unfurl on the nose, which is not overly complex and yet has rustic charm. That rusticity follows through on the palate, where hints of fennel and basil tinge the red fruit. Quite ferrous toward the finish, which is now just beginning to lose a bit of puff. Drink bottles over the next 10 years. Tasted at the estate and privately. Rating: 92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Sept 2019)

Generous on the nose, it does not quite offer the fruit intensity of the 1990, but there are lovely warm gravel and licorice aromas, all beautifully detailed. The palate is silky smooth on the entry, sensual in style with Provençal herbs and fennel tincturing the mixture of smudged red and black fruit. From all accounts, it appears to have been a wine that shot out of the blocks with style, then ran out of steam for many years. Yet here, it is as if the 1989 has rediscovered that youthful promise, perchance at a point in time when many bottles have been popped and poured. Tasted June 2015. Rating: 93 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jun 2015)

Looks much more mature than the 1990 just tasted. Mid ruby with rusty rim. Intense, sweet with sweet licorice. Sweeter, smoother and more tarry than the 1990. Long and rich with layered undertow. Drinking range: 1998 - 2018 Rating: 18.5 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Jun 2015)

Château Figeac

Figeac is a very ancient estate dating from the Gallo-Roman period. Its origins go back to at least the 2nd century, at which time it belonged to the Figeacus family, who gave their name to the “villa” located on this site. Château Figeac has been in the family of the present owner since 1892. Thierry Manoncourt, later assisted by his wife, Marie–France, took great pains to renovate the vineyards in order to bring Figeac up to the level of the very greatest Bordeaux. Today, his daughter Laure and his son-in-law Count Eric d’Aramon have joined them in managing the estate, and perpetuating the family tradition. Figeac is located in the “Graves de Saint Emilion”. It has an unusual topography and outstanding terroir consisting of three gravelly outcrops. This explains why Figeac is the right bank wine chateau with the highest proportion of Cabernet grapes. It is a great but atypical wine, often called “the most Médoc of Saint Emilion wines”.
