Classification 5ème Cru Classé

A strikingly successful wine at 31 years old, from one of the great Cabernet Sauvignon vintages, requiring patience for the first decade but proving impressively long-lasting. Bilberry, loganberry and cassis fruits all very much still in play, set against smoked, grilled earth, flint and pencil lead nuances. A classic Pauillac, essence of Grand Puy Lacoste. Harvest September 17 to October 5, exact blend not recorded. 50% new oak for ageing. Drinking range: 2021 - 2040 Rating: 95 Jane Anson, www.janeanson.com (Oct 2021)

Along with the 1982, 2000, and 2005, the 1990 is one of those monumental Grand Puy Lacostes that you can't have enough of. Still inky/blue/purple-colored to the rim, it boasts a gorgeously sweet, pure nose of creme de cassis, spring flowers, and a hint of wet rocks. The wine is full-bodied, plush, and expansive with impressive levels of glycerin and purity as well as an endearing texture. This 1990 is evolving at a glacial pace, but the sweetness of the tannins and low acidity ensure a delicious treat whenever a bottle is opened. It should evolve for another 20-25 years Rating: 96 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com (Jun 2009)

Tasted at the chateau, this has a deep garnet core. The nose is very tight at first, over-shadowed by the more ebullient ’98 at first although it begins to unfurl with aeration and evolves some lovely ripe blackberry, cedar, briary and iodine tinged fruits, the bouquet eschewing any hot summer fruit characteristics. The palate is full-bodied with a firm tannic structure matched by its admirable fruit concentration and its acidity that lends it so much freshness and vitality. Great weight, this reminds me of the awesome ’82 that is now only just beginning to drink. Blackberry, raspberry and just a touch of savoury fruit on the long, masculine finish. An outstanding ’90, but for those with patience, this will be a Pauillac to treasure for the next 20 years. Rating: 95 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Apr 2008)

Château Grand Puy Lacoste

Pauillac Cinquième Cru 1855.

If there's an estate that can rival Lynch Bages for the crown of most over-performing 5th Growth, it would be Grand-Puy-Lacoste.

The "Grand Puy" is the low gravelly hill on which the vineyards sit. In 1750 a portion were sold to Pierre Ducasse and became, obviously, Château Grand Puy Ducasse while the rest, after a couple of name changes owing to inheritance by daughters, became Château Grand Puy Lacoste.

The Borie family bought into Grand Puy Lacoste in 1978 and began quite a renaissance for the property.

Just a few kilometres from the town of Pauillac, the vineyards of Chateau Grand-Puy-Lacoste total roughly 36 hectares (90 acres) with Cabernet Sauvignon making up 75% of the total plantings and the rest belonging to Merlot (20%) and Cabernet Franc (5%). Typical of the region, the vineyard consists of a deep gravel top soil on a limestone base.

Production is about 12,000 cases of wine in an average year. Fermentation takes place in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks, and then the wines are placed into oak barrels (50% new) for 18 months of aging.
