Black fruits, rosebud and rose stem nuances. There are tannins still in evidence, and some architecture to hang the acidity from, but this is a little disappointing overall, with a dip through the mid palate. The last in a series of three (even four) extremely challenging vintages in the Médoc. 80% new oak. Drinking range: 2022 - 2030 Rating: 85 Jane Anson, Decanter (Jun 2022)

The 1994 Pichon-Baron is a much better wine than the previous three vintages. It has superior definition, for a start, offering scents of blackberry, wild strawberry, cedar and pencil lead; a hint of black tea develops in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple and quite fine tannin. The acidity lends freshness, and there is a pleasant sense of precision toward the graphite- and spice-tinged finish. Not bad at all - a success in the context of what is considered to be a mediocre growing season. Tasted at the Pichon-Baron vertical at the château. An extremely well-balanced and well-crafted wine. Shows impressive dried cherry, cassis and dried herb character. Medium-bodied, with silky tannins and a mineral, cassis aftertaste. Rating: 88 James Suckling, The Wine Spectator (Nov 1997)

Very good deep red. Pungent mineral and oak spice nose. Firm on the palate, but seems only moderately ripe and lacking in nuance. This has an austerity without offering the promise of richness and personality to come. Where's the sweetness of ripe fruit? Finishes with rather hard tannins.
