1996 Grand Cru Classé Saint Emilion

Grapes Cab Sauv, Merlot, Cab Franc
Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Saint Emilion & Satellites
Village Saint Emilion
Classification Grand Cru Classé

Even after the Clos de l’Oratoire this is extraordinary. Inky dark, wonderful nose, full of crème de mûre, very sweet and full, very powerful, but it is the underlying finesse which makes it exciting and gorgeous. 100% new wood, so it will be oaky in the end, but judging by the 1996 the wine will stay ahead. One of the best wines of the vintage. L&S (Mar 2005)

This is one of St.-Emilion's most impressively constituted and expressive wines. From its saturated purple color, to its soaring aromatics (pain grille, jammy black fruits, chocolate, roasted coffee, and smoke), this full-bodied, meaty, chewy, powerful wine is loaded with extract, sweet tannin for the vintage, and possesses a layered, multidimensional finish. It should continue to improve for a decade, and drink well for 15-20 years. 2007-2020. Rating: 90 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com (Mar 2005)

Château Canon La Gaffelière

Château Canon La Gaffelière started out life with two seperate names. It was known as Canon Boitard and La Gaffelière-Boitard in the 19th century. Skipping ahead to modern history, in 1969, Count Joseph-Hubert von Neipperg purchased the Bordeaux wine estate in 1971. The von Neipperg family remain the owners today. Stephan von Neipperg manages the property as well as several other St. Emilion estates owned by the family. The Bordeaux wine property is located south of the St. Emilion village. It’s not far from La Gaffeliere. The terroir is sand and clay. The sandy topsoil adds more sand when you travel further from the slopes. The slope soil has a large concentration of clay. There is also a thick vein of clay in the subsoil, at a depth of between 70 and 150 cm.
