Grapes Cab Sauv, Cab Franc, Merlot
Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
District Left Bank
Sub-district Haut Médoc
Village Pauillac
Classification 2ème Cru Classé

Ripe just to the last possible point before being sweet. Complete and completely full, with complexity coming. Great depth - there are classical black depths of pencil-lead to plumb. A beautifully-structured, super wine. This is clearly an better wine than the slightly disappointing (for Pichon Lalande) 2000. L&S (Mar 2005)

Sweeter and silkier aromatics on the nose than the 2000 vintage, a more softly spoken wild strawberry and raspberry puree fruit, with acidity evident on the close of play. Tobacco and campfire notes curl through alongside white pepper and tumeric. It is supremely elegant, almost more St Julien than Pauillac in expression but still plenty of estate signature. The fine tannins build up over the palate and tell you that it is not going anywhere soon. A gentler and more seductive expression than the biggest vintages. 50% new oak, 3.89ph. Drinking range: 2021 - 2035 Rating: 94 Jane Anson, Decanter (Sept 2021)

The 2001 Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is a vintage that I was surprised to discover I had not tasted for a decade. Showing light bricking on the rim, it has an open nose of brambly red berry fruit intermixed with cola, sage and tobacco, the relative higher proportion of Merlot rendering a different Grand Vin compared to nowadays. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy, ripe and now quite melted tannins. Savory in style, this is becoming quite a Saint-Julien-like Pauillac, hints of dried blood developing toward the finish as secondary notes become more pronounced. This is now reaching its maturity, although it has the substance to last another 20-some years. Drinking range: 2021 - 2050 Rating: 93 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Sept 2021)

A distinctive bouquet of violets, soy, pepper, blackberries, cassis, and tree bark gives this 2001 a singular style. This dense ruby/purple-colored blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, and a whopping 14% Petit Verdot exhibits plenty of structure, wonderful sweetness, a closed style, but a rich, textured, persistent character. The unusually large percentage of Petit Verdot gives the wine more structure and less initial charm. This beauty needs some time in the cellar. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2018. Rating: 93 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com (Apr 2008)

Château Pichon Lalande

Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is a second Growth in the Pauillac appellation. The estate, which is commonly referred to as just Chateau Pichon-Lalande, used to be a part of the larger Pichon estate, owned by Pierre de Rauzan. The larger Pichon estate gained its name when Pierre's daughter Thérèse married Jacques de Pichon Longueville in the 17th Century. Pichon-Lalande was later separated from Pichon Baron in 1850 due to inheritance, with the name Lalande being gained again through another marriage. The estate was passed down through the generations until the Great War when it was auctioned to Edouard and Louis Miailhe in 1925. Edouard's daughter May Eliane de Lencquesaing became the owner in 1978 and thanks to her passion for wine and strict management; she has seen Pichon Lalande's reputation grow immeasurably around the world. In 2007 she passed it on to the Louis Roederer Champagne house, with the Rouzaud family looking to preserve the traditions. The vineyard covers 75 hectares and lies on deep gravel beds over layers of clay, limestone and sand. The vines consist of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon vines; giving the wine structure, 35% Merlot; providing a certain roundness, 12% Cabernet Franc balancing the wine and 8% Petit Verdot to provide freshness. Together these characteristics provide a softer somewhat more feminine wine, particularly more so than its brother estate Pichon Baron.
