2001 du Château Léoville Las Cases Saint Julien

Grapes Cab Sauv, Cab Franc, Merlot
Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Haut Médoc
Village Saint Julien

47% of the harvest at Las Cases is in this second wine. Very aromatic. Deep colour, pure, intense and very smooth fruit - seamless. Cool and classy with the freshness of the vintage - nice classical structure. There is a solid core to this which is masked by its superficial grace. Intense cassis clings to the final tannins. Most Châteaux would be proud of this as a first wine. L&S (Mar 2005)

Delicious liquorice, chocolate and cedar on the nose with loads of blackcurrant fruit too. Smooth but impressive tannins and medium body, and still with plentiful primary fruit – this is ageing superbly. Drinking range: 2011 - 2031 Rating: 17 Richard Hemming MW - 2018)

Shrewd consumers have been stocking up on Las Cases’s second wine for many years, and why not? The 2001 Clos du Marquis tastes like a classified growth Bordeaux. Deep ruby/purple-colored, it is more open-knit and forward than its bigger sibling, exhibiting lovely cassis fruit intermixed with underbrush, earth, and subtle background oak. 2004-2018 Rating: 89 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 2011)
